But when a friend request or suggestion came up, I thought, "Eh, we mostly just rubbed each other the wrong way, and I'm friends with most of your friends. Let's assume by now that we've all grown up a bit."

Of course, there are some people I don't want to have contact with for specific reasons.

@Bear, I'm glad you had an opportunity where having your cards handy worked out. I'm not going to say I never have my business cards, I do. For people less technically inclined, it's a good way to exchange information. I will say, though, in my experience over the last year, anywhere where people are bearing a stack of cards means that they don't care what I have to say. They're looking for a professional handout because circumstances haven't been kind to them. Or they want me to Buy, Buy, Buy! Whereas if I go into a situation where the cards aren't part of my wardrobe for the evening, I have found that the tone of the evening is in favor of friendship, not networking. Business cards can be a trigger for you to go into networking-mode, and if that's not what you want, you probably shouldn't throw a stack in your purse. If you can balance it, then good for you!

@Kate, yeah, there are some that I don't friend...What I do love is you don't always have to be friends with everyone, you have a choice.

Plus, I was in the store and for the price I'd envisioned, it was right there. Portability is huge, and what I'd mentioned about not being able to envision using an mp3 player as a recording instrument. Need for mic and earphones over-complicates for me. The Sony has big obvious buttons for my big obvious fingers, and that's a comfort zone I see no need to leave. I remember buying a car stereo unit, a couple actually between '93 and '00 and complaining that you had to use one button to turn thing on and another to turn off, both the size or a Chiclet--'fraid I'm skewing way old here--Why not just big knob for on /off, big knob for volume. These most common functions are easily served by two big knobs, imo. And I wasn't even thinking of charge time, Zach, but the fact that iPods eventually die and need to be replaced. had my portable cassette recorder for taping interviews etc, for 11 years. Worked great on batteries until last year. Anyway, Kyle summed it up nicely. Thanks for everyone's input. Really appreciate it.

Kenji Crosland I've come to terms with the fact that my business will require time to grow properly, and have decided to look for a day job. I plan on using the web app I created as proof that I have been doing something productive the last year and that I am a self-starter who can learn new skills quickly. On the other hand, I don't want employers to think that I'll just leave when my business takes off. What's the best way to reassure an employer that I'll be committed?

Melanie McGrath We're starting a website about Latina/o issues and as we are starting up we are seeking writers who would like to collaborate on writing short biographies. In our initial stages we'll be sharing ad revenue with writers. This is an opportunity for writers who seek to gain exposure and network with other writers to improve our writing. Rebecca Thorman I was in DC this wkend and was struck by how cool/important the jobs were of those I met - two people worked for the FBI in top-secret positions, many were in the Coast Guard, one girl sold weapons to other countries, several lawyers/finance, another sold jets, and yet another sold helicopters. The quality of conversation as a result seemed better than in other cities. Have you found this to be true in DC? Does a strong gov't sector create strong jobs? Are smart people concentrated there?

Rebecca Thorman I am not a fan of the image of a tortured artist and the prevalent paradigm of creatives moseying along until inspiration strikes and that they are the chosen for such talent. Real success has nothing to do with that and everything to do with hard work.
