Ryan Healy Is it just me or do you guys think "work/life balance" is a totally outdated paradigm? Why would you want to separate work from your life?

The important thing is to remember that there is a difference between "work" and "vocation." For those with a vocation, I can see how it might be easy for lines to blur. But I believe that the majority of the population does not have a vocation. And if you only work, even if you consider it a career, then your fulfillment will come from outside of your job and it makes sense to keep the two separate.

At times, I think I have balance in my life. I am able to adequately manage the things at work while still maintaining my lifestyle (ex: going to the gym, seeing friends, traveling etc) but there are also times when I don't have it and am not able to do those things. While its not ideal, I know that when I don't have great balance that it will come back, but if it goes on for too long of a stretch then I know I need to either do or say something to fix it.

Ryan Paugh My girlfriend and I have been talking to a personal finance guy about how we can save more money. One of the things he mentioned was that focusing on a couple areas where we could save money would be dramatically more effective than trying to focus on everything. Coincidentally, my friend Ramit Sethi just emailed me one of his recent WSJ articles with the same advice: http://nyti.ms/fzF9jL

The two things that are most useful that we've done is a monthly budget, plus using cash envelopes for variable purchases, like groceries, entertainment and clothing. The budget didn't work for me until I used the cash envelopes. Once the cash is gone, I don't get to spend in that category. It works! I feel like I have more money now that I tell it where to go every month.

I understand why Starbucks does roast really dark, however. They need to keep their flavor consistent across batches, which is easiest to do with a really dark roast, and they usually sell drinks piled with non-coffee into the same cup, which weakens the coffee flavor some. Therefore, they roast it darker and brew it stronger.

It affected me indirectly because I lived in the country but not in the war zone area. So I just want to clarify that no, I did not "escape" and I wasn't a victim of it. I just wanted to point out that I had that experience of living with it and therefore as you say to me "an attack was an attack, a loss of life, a loss of life" whether it made global headline news or not.

I'm human, I fully expect to die at some point because I'm not stupid enough to believe it won't happen. People can love you or hate you for the smallest things, I know that too. So I enjoy my life because I could die tomorrow for any reason in any way and it would be a travesty if I sat still and felt sorry for myself for too long. I might not have much cash but I am better off than 80% of the global population who live in poverty, I know about that and I know I am lucky and so I am grateful.

No nation is untouchable. The idea that you are creates an attitude that tells others that you are not compassionate, aware or grateful for what you have got and then that can lead to a lot of misunderstandings. I never fully understood why the people around me during 9/11 didn't understand this. America's long history of foreign policy decisions made it inevitable that some country/political group would hate them - something was bound to happen at some point. Sad but true. Don't elect a president who has never been out of the country before - you need someone who understands more about the world. I was surprised that it wasn't sooner rather than later.
