Cameron Plommer I want to start reading "the classic" authors. Emerson, Hemingway, Twain, Vonnegut, others. Suggestion for where to start and which books?

All good reads. This is a good idea to get back to, though...classics continue to be popular for good reason!

Maybe go with Mother Night first because it's more accessible, or perhaps Player Piano because it was his first novel and not yet written in his eventually polished form. After that, then dive into Slaughterhouse-Five and Cat's Cradle. If you can make it to Breakfast of Champions without saying "What just happened?" then you're a Vonnegut fan for life.

Virginia Merritt Hey folks, Just looking for others thinking about going PHD or who are . I just finished my M.A. and taught on the college level for two years. I love (and miss) teaching, I love (and miss) my research, but I have no desire for the Publish, Publish, Publish life. Any insight or advice would be excellent. My research method is rhetorical criticism in Communication Studies and I'm also a social media and marketing professional, if that helps any feedback.

Most of everything you both brought up are the exact reasons/obstacles keeping me away from really finishing my applications. I have friends who LOVE their programs and I have Friends who have dropped out of their programs due to many of the reasons you both listed. It's a hard choice to make and frankly, I'm not really sure if I am ready.

My MA was from a top notch terminal masters program that was run like a mini PHD. 30+ page research papers for each course, publications, conference presentations, teaching... I feel the program really prepared me for the issues/obstacles that are out there, but my research method is one that those who do SPSS don't "respect" even though our fore-scholars include Burke, Bormann, and Campbell. It's harder to publish in Comm journals as a rhetorical critic and harder to find jobs because there are typically only 2-4 on a department. But I LOVE my research method and feel even if I don't follow through with PHD, it's a method that will be profitable to me as I still perform my research, find it very valuable when it comes to my own startup PR/Marketing/Communication company and can't wait to utilize it within the blogs I'll be doing. I just love showing how companies, political campaigns, and etc utilize communication to persuade, create critical masses. I also love showing how these forms of communication illustrate the master narratives within our society along with the counter-narratives out there. I feel this understanding of how communication works really separates me in the business world. And I can always go back to school (and part of me feels going back for the PHD now is "giving up" or "taking the easy way out".)thanks again!

Gretchen I don't think anyone here commented about J.D. Salinger's recent passing. Come on, we aren't too young to have appreciated his genius writing, right?! I'm a huge Holden Caulfield fan myself! http://dontforgetlove.blogspot.com/2010/02/holden-caulfield-is-my-ideal-...

Yeah, I hope what he left behind does get published, and I hope it includes more hating on the phonies of the world!

Gretchen Hi all, I have a lot of experience in research but I'm looking to find something in policy. Any tips on finding ed policy jobs or how to market yourself for a similar position? I have job experience in quantitative research but I have coursework in ed policy--also I have work experience at an after school program. Thanks!

Gretchen Anyone using contacts made through your volunteering to job search and/or network? I haven't found this to be too successful for myself but I know other program alumni who have been successful.

Mojgan Fay Finished Animal, Vegetable, Miracle and can't stop thinking about it. It inspired me to make sourdough bread, make my own cheese, go to farmers markets, and completely change the way I look at food. You can find my review here: http://www.somethinglemon.com/?p=122

Gretchen I'm a Former Jesuit Volunteer who now works in health research at Columbia University but I'm interested in pursuing a career education policy. Much of my life goals and interests are a direct result of my participation in JVC. I hope others will share their own volunteer experiences!

Gretchen I haven't picked up a "classic" in ages but now I'm reading Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. It's fantastic! Any other Austen lovers here? I write a lot about books I'm reading here too--http://dontforgetlove.blogspot.com/

Marian Schembari BA in Sociology and Gender Studies, got a good job in publishing which I promptly quit to enroll in culinary school to become a pastry chef. My fellow Davidson grads are impressed... in that thank-God-I'm-not-you-and-committing-career-suicide kind of way.
