I recently returned from vacation in NYC and Ocean City, NJ. Before this I was a workaholif and burned out. http://tiny.cc/0o7ry
What are your workaholic tendencies, and what strategies and actions have you taken to overcome them?

I really think exercise helps a lot. Not only does it help me be more productive, but restores a sense of balance as well. I like to run outside (not in a gym - it's not the same). I also have to consciously make plans with friends. And travel is great. I love to take an extra day or two when I have to travel for work, and I often travel with my boyfriend for his work too. We take a lot of weekend vacations too. 95 weeks ago

It is important to take that time and rejuvenate and it will help you work more efficiently. I think it is all about discipline and balancing your life. Working should only be part of your life! 95 weeks ago

I am in the process of trying to establish a non-profit Main Street downtown revitalization organization within my city.
Does anyone have advice on trying to start a NP from scratch. I am currently meeting with chamber, college, legislative, and city officials to pitch my idea and get them onboard. I have some non-profit event planning and economic development planning experience, but I want to solicit all advice from those already working in an N-P.
I appreciate your advice,
Thanks

The org will follow the pattern of the National Main Street Program: Design, Promotion, Organization, and Economic Restructuring.
My family has owned and operated an insurance agency in the city for the last 40 years, and within the downtown for the last 15. The downtown is very sparce when it comes to businesses. However, our local community college is moving their health sciences and culinary arts programs downtown.
Our chamber is part-time and run by a bunch of retired individuals who admit they do not have the resources or time to make it an effective org. for the future. They do a great job at organizing community events though.
I actually wrote my thesis on the theory and practices of downtown revitalization of the four third class cities, including my own, completed two internships working on comprehensive plans, and worked for an economic development firm that specializes in downtown revitalization for a year. I am used to working with these types of orgs, so my approach would be more of reverse engineering the management end. After I meet with everyone in July, I am going to plan an organizing meeting in August to get the ball rolling if everyone is onboard. 100 weeks ago

Good evening everyone. I've just joined the group and would like to know if anyone has used social media to highlight their agencies. If so, tell me about it. Please.....

I also like the way blogs present information in a bite-sized, more conversational style. Some of the local websites that contain lots of information can be difficult to navigate, even for people like me who previously worked in government. But I see that as an opportunity to call the clerk and ask for advice -- thereby setting up a relationship with the clerk. :) 107 weeks ago
