Janet Brent I am a new start-up trying to freelance graphic/web design services. My site is www.byjanet.net Since I am starting out, and based in Asia, I am outsourcing myself for cheap until May. I am finding that there is a 'planting seeds' period of freelance in which you have to be patient and trust the process. I'm still trying to get the hang of it (particularly networking 'planting seeds'). Have had a handful of client leads but nothing that has solidified. Do you have similar experiences or advice?

A great rule a thumb is to never discount what you would consider your unique selling proposition. So setting a penetration price across the broad might be a big much. You'll have to let us know how it works out for you.

Write down your value proposition and price justification, and stick to it.

Janet Brent I have a very part time social media job if anyone is interested. You can work from anywhere as long as you have internet. I need someone to fill for me for four months. It's fairly easy money and involves updating twitter/facebook and blog writing.

Renee Patrick I'm looking to find work in the outdoor industry, possibly start a new guiding business in my area (Bend, OR) and am extremely daunted by the prospect of starting from scratch and getting away from what I really love and why I'm entertaining the idea in the first place, living and working in the wilderness. Are there any people in a similar place in the outdoor industry? I'm hesitant to put too much into a suffering economy when I would be providing a luxury service...

I've already done the Americorps thing building trail in Colorado, am a guide for another company have have about 7,000 backpacking miles under my belt. It seems to me a business is the next logical step, just very hesitant/scared about going on my own right now! I think approaching SBA is a great next step...

That's the beauty of this business, is that most people who take advantage of these services do so on the weekend. Also, have you thought about partnering with an existing guiding business and perhaps add a new service or new trips?

Janet Brent Hey everyone! I'm going to India to volunteer for 3 weeks this January, then moving abroad to the Philippines for at least a year. Bought one-way tickets. Anyone have exciting travel plans? Tips? Ideas? Experiences? I want to know!

If you haven't already been to the Philippines many Filipinos will tell you to go to two places:Baguio-4ish hours from the capital and Boracay-have to island hop but well worth it. It's been a couple of years since I've been there, so I kinda envy you atm. For some history head to Ft. Ilocandia, and if you're a hard core shopper theres Mall of Asia. Have fun!

Janet Brent Kimberly, My current job is actually working for a company to manage their twitter accounts, and their client's twitter/fb accounts and blog posts. It's still fairly new tho. Do you get paid per tweet?

I think in 2010 it will become more quantifiable for business and then a better pay model for freelancers will probably be established. Like you say it only takes minutes but it's more the thinking behind the tweets that should be charged for.

You have the responsibility to find out for yourself and then demand the wage or/and a performance based pay structure. Per tweet is a no no. You are building their reputation online and what you do now will benefit them long term. By the way, I have not really worked for others with twitter other than a couple friends, so I am curious as to find out what happen
