Erin Murtagh I've been absent from Brazen for quite awhile working on creating a diverse work life that I can get excited about. I started this group because I was interested in people who've made wild career changes. I want to hear about people taking huge risks to find work they love. I want to hear how you thought outside the box to break into a field you had no experience in. That's what I envisioned for this group. Group members, tell me why you joined this group. What did you hope to find here?

Erin Murtagh Are you a photographer? Better photos help animals get adopted out of shelters. The marketing part of pet adoption is extremely important. How many animals could be saved from better marketing? Consider donating your photography skills and time to help a local shelter to upgrade photos of adoptable pets. William Bryan How do handle with not achieving a long-term goal? I had a long term goal of getting into graduate school at Truman State University. I met all the short term goals I set up for myself, but in the end I was not accepted. How do you handle with defeat? What are some steps to keep your positive attitude? I try my best to stay positive by reading motivational blogs or stories, but I still get down on myself and crawl into a comfort zone. What do you do to keep yourself aggressive and movitivated?

It was about environmentalism, and I learned a lot about how the US has (or in most cases hasn't) been involved in combating global warming, or changing our policies to make a stronger shift toward sustainability. It made me wish I had majored in poli sci or environmental studies - I loved the material and the professor so much!

I'm not doing exactly that but I could easily see my schedule evolving into this. I've been dropping projects a lot lately, just for my own sanity. I make a list of all of my obligations and prioritize them. If there are projects that are low priority and take up a lot of my time I figure out a way to get rid of them.

Rebecca Thorman Do you ever think you'll have a "career for life"? Or is that paradigm officially over? Research shows that fewer Gen Yers are willing to job hop, with 25 percent wanting to stay with a current employer until retirement, compared to 14 percent who wanted that in 2008. (http://bit.ly/b6oFbb) I have to say, if I could stay at my current job forever, I probably would. Alas, we're a start-up and life-long employment isn't the goal...

When I first graduated college, my back-up plan was to teach as it was always a "safe" profession to me. Now, it's gotten to the point where it's not even safe anymore. In the private industry, in my profession, publications are disappearing left and right. Do I realistically believe my job will even exist in ten years? So what are "safe" career paths these days?

It's pretty important to avoid the Broken Window effect, I think. Community Guidelines isn't a bad idea, but might be something better done on a network-by-network basis (linking to a post in the forum explaining them). In my Web Startups group, for instance, I'd want founders to feel free to announce if their startup were open for signups / request reviews... so long as they don't abuse it.
