I will be spending a long weekend in Manhattan soon to visit my 20 year old sister. My friends and I want to go out at night, and we would like to include my sister in our plans. Does anyone know of any bars or lounges where underagers can get in?

Also, any tips or suggestions for getting around New York, places to eat, and things to see/do on a budget would be appreciated! 106 weeks ago

I'm writing a travel article - both for profit, and for nostalgia! (I'm planning a return trip to Eastern Europe later on this summer.) Do any Brazeners want to pitch in their best and worst experiences of staying in hostels? I have had nothing but positive experiences, so my view of hostels might be skewed - but I'd love others' perspectives, especially if you wouldn't mind being quoted in the piece! (I'll send you a link when it's online.)

How can they prevent the horrific experience (or find the good one) with all the resources out there right now? 106 weeks ago

These ...MoreI strongly recommend travelers invest in a good guidebook. I prefer the "Let's Go" books, but Lonely Planet is also full of helpful hints. These books describe the ammenities available and the general price range of hostels.
It is also helpful to talk to other travelers. Usually, backpackers make their plans as they go, which means they might be booking a hostel at the last minute. Other travelers may have great suggestions of a hostel where they previously stayed. If my friends and I had listened to a fellow traveler who warned us about the awful hostel that we booked for Berlin, we could have canceled our reservation and found nicer accomodations.
Hosteling is certainly a learning experience, and the most important lesson I learned was to book online through hostelbookers.com. Hostelbookers.com is a wonderful resource for travelers as it not only lists each hostel's ammenities, but it also allows travelers to rate those ammenities. If other travelers have given the hostel a low cleanliness rating, it might be best to find another place to stay. If the hostel is rated high for location, friendliness of staff and cleanliness, you have probably found the city's haven for young travelers. My friends and I attempted to book a hostel in Florence, Italy, through a different Web site, and that hostel did not exist. We arrived in Florence to find we were stranded in a foreign city without a place to stay, and we ended up losing a whole day trying to find a hotel with a vacancy durin high tourism season. The other important lesson we learned from this experience was to call the hostel or at least check the hostel's validity via another Web site, guidebook or fellow traveler who has stayed there. 106 weeks ago

Hi Everyone, I'm heading to Greece in about 2 weeks and I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations of places to see, islands to visit, or the best way to travel around the country. I would love to get some suggestions. Thanks!

I agree with Erin; you can take the ferry overnight if you want from Athens as to not waste a day. When you get to the islands, you can travel between islands by high speed ferry. You can buy an island package.. or just play it by ear. I would recommend Santorini for sure.. and Ios if you would like a more foreign experience. There aren't as many Americans on Ios compared to Mykonos. 106 weeks ago

I'm a jouranlism student and I'm doing a research paper on how journalists use social media: both in the newsroom and to brand themselves.
I'm looking for journalists who use social media to answer some questions:
Name, media position, company (or freelance, if appropriate)
What social media sites do you use for journalism?
Do you have different sites for different uses? (eg. Facebook for friends, etc.)
Do you think social media has a role in the newsroom? What is that role?
Thanks!

I'm a freelance journalist, and I have used Twitter, Facebook and MySpace to find sources and verify information in my current work and previous reporting experience in the newsroom. As a staff reporter in college for the student newspaper, I wrote a preview story for Chelsea Handler's on-campus performance. This was before her E! TV show, Chelsea Lately, and the success of her books, so I researched her MySpace comedy page for her bio, to verify the performance date and to watch clips of her stand-up routine and TV appearances. I also searched Facebook within my college's network for people to interview who were likely to attend the show. I was looking for Chelsea Handler fans, so I searched for her name and sent messages to a few students who listed her in their interests. Facebook made it easy to search for sources within a network a few years ago, but most Facebook users keep their info private to their friends' eyes only now. Therefore, Facebook is less useful than it once was, but Twitter has started to fill that void. 109 weeks ago
