Dana Leavy: Thanks Erica - no password. I know it asks for one, but you can just hit the button and it will bypass it. Appreciate it! :)

Dana Leavy When I was a full time recruiter for the creative industry, I was adamant about meeting each one of my candidates face to face so I could understand their career objectives, and get to know them as a person. Now with so much technology out there to facilitate the hiring process, recruiters and candidates have more options for building those relationships. As job seekers, how do you prefer to manage your relationships with recruiters - phone, face to face, email, Skype, even social media?

A good way to look at it is also how I like to help people take perspective on networking. Sometimes it's not an immediate pop, but the idea is to create and continue to grow a relationship with someone, and continue to stay in touch with the objective of staying on their radar. Whether it's a recruiter, or a hiring manager you met at an event, keeping the relationship going and staying on their radar positions you as someone who's interested and qualified for any opportunities that might come across their desk. That way, when they do, and they need to be filled immediately, they think of you and reach out.

And I don't think there is such a thing as a perfect placement. Some things are better fit then others. Same with trying to find the best candidate. As Voltaire said, Perfect is the enemy of good. I believe that in both the recruiting industry and the job market in general, people shoot themselves in the foot by passing over good opportunities, jobs, employees, etc trying to find "better" ones that are really no guarantee of performing any better than the good.

Kristi Leach I'm relocating, and I'm seeking contract and temp positions to explore my field a bit and feel out the area job market. A times, I'll be using a recruiting service. I've read that I shouldn't be the first to mention salary during the interview process. Does this still apply for temps and contractors?

Chris Parker: You can answer that one by saying "what are the going rates for your staffing agency.

Laura Benson-Hadley Hi, everyone. I'm looking for some advice about networking in Milwaukee. One Brazen suggested FUEL, which I'm looking into. Does anyone else have any ideas for networking, either online or (even more helpfully) in person? How about local job fairs? THANK YOU!!!

Laura,
When I was new in Milwaukee three years ago, I tried FUEL and really didn't find it offered much. Instead, I joined AAUW (American Association of University Women)-Milwaukee Branch. It's a nationally affiliated organization with very rich local roots and history. It's also very affordable compared to other professional women's networking organizations in town.
Further, the women in the group are great mentors and stack new members in leadership positions. I've gotten three speaking gigs and three leadership titles as a result of the connections I've made in the group and I've made some great local friends as well. They are incredibly welcoming and very invested in new, working professional members. I highly recommend looking into it, message me for more info!
Good luck!
