Kenji Crosland I've just programmed a prototype of a web app that I hope will be successful, but it may not. I am a novice programmer with 7 months of self-taught experience and a voracious appetite for learning new things. I love making my ideas real and was thinking about joining a startup to learn more about the business if my first web application fails. I feel like my level of knowledge in web development has reached a plateau that could only be surmounted by working with experienced individuals. Ideas?

Red-hot field, going to really take off in an app world. I strongly recommend you read About Face 3.0 (Cooper) and Designing in the Digital Age (Goodwin), in that order. That should give you an idea of the scope and the unique capabilities of UX. In a nutshell: it's not about what something can do, or even what it does, but whether what it does matters to people. Finding that out is surprisingly tricky and yet incredibly valuable.
Any startup will hire a sales guy, but you probably won't have time to do anything else...and I feel that's not really where your heart is at anyway. Try looking for very embryonic startups that are working on defining their products...use your Rails as your fast-prototyping thing and leverage what you've learned about UX. Most startup guys are engineers who have come up with a cool functionality. Shaping it into a real product is usually not their forte.

Cameron Plommer So I check out Seth Godin's new book Linchpin and have read the intro and first five or so pages or the first chapter. As an "economist" I love how he describes the interchangable-worker paradigm of our society. And i can tell I'm going to really enjoy the book. The only problem is that it makes me want to do what the book is preaching so much that I stop reading and go do stuff do make myself indispensable. But I guess that the point right?

There was so much to think about on each page, that it took me a long time to read what is a very thin book. I would read a few pages and then go off brainstorming about some point he makes...have not yet read Linchpin...will have to buy it.

Marie Williams: Ha, I didn't see this thread before I posted I was reading Linchpin. I agree, it is a great, inspiring read. I really want to put it into practice.

Dale Beermann Is anyone using Basecamp for project management? I'm evaluating it right now and find it really frustrating. I shift milestones and all of the todos are still under the old dates. It's nearly impossible to effectively change a project plan from what I can tell. Does anyone have other suggestions? Pivotal Tracker looks interesting, and it's free. I need something that can do project management and time tracking for consulting gigs.

I found out that they have a time tracking feature, you just have to ask to have it enabled. It's also free, and based on agile development, which for me is perfect.

I like the connectivity with FreshBooks... Despite that, I've been with using 5pm (http://www.5pmweb.com/) for months now, and find it quite easy to use. My clients seem to find it valuable as well for collaboration and issue / progress tracking.

Daniel Goyeneche Thoughts on last night's episode? It was probably the best episode so far (maybe 2nd best). Ben is by far the best character...although we saw a softer side of him - will evil/cunning Ben return?

Eric King: I too am enjoying the good-vs-evil internal conflicts as they are developing. Except for Hugo, of course. He's pure goodness.

Maybe along the journey of following Jacob he got bitter and started to doubt...or something...puzzling indeed..

Good tip Zach. Ryan, for Blogger or BlogSpot blogs, the feed-per-label can be generated by a url like:

Replace the "Label" portion at the end of the url with the blog post category. Note: the "Label" tag is case-sensitive.

Tyler Durbin I'm thinking for 2010 I want to cancel my cable to help me meet some of my 2010 Goals (i.e. Save more money, read more books, get involved in more philanthropy). I'm having a hard time convincing myself (i'm an avid sports fan, can't live without MadMen and Million Dollar Listing) and keep CNN on all the time. Any one going without their cable? Any help?

I recommend my girlfriend's approach to finding the right antenna. She went to the store and bought 4-5 antennas, tried them all out at her place and returned all but the best the next day. I've convinced 2 people to change this year and they both said the same thing - they're just so mad they paid for cable so long.
