Cary Thomson Hi All In the next few weeks I'll be serving on a interview committee that's looking to hire a new assistant to the director. I've already figured out that I'll be aiming for behavioral based questions and I know the competencies/attitude we're aiming form. However I was wondering if any one out there had some good advice on picking the right person for the job?

I think that that can really help a candidate stand out as a good fit in addition to competencies and overall attitudes.

Thanks for the feedback - definitely food for thought.

Your totally right that we need to separate out the teachables from the more inbuilt qualities like tact and discretion. Also the candidate needs to fit in with our culture and be able to work with the director. Also since he/she needs to work with me on certain projects we'll need to be able to work together.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Emanuele Torre I would like your opinion about pursuing an MBA as a mean for changing career/taking time to explore more industries while furthering your education adding the 3 magic letters in the CV. Unhappy with my past job,I decided to leave almost 1yr ago, I traveled and volunteered, experiences that expanded my horizons and broadened my mindset to an extent that now it's more clear than ever that I can't revert to my past job, but given the current crisis is difficult to change career, MBA the solution?

...I guess you could manage to jump on the right boat without an MBA. I believe there's no such a thing like a self made man, is all about connections, that's what an MBA is there for, connections with the job market, connections with alumni network, but if you already have them, you can prosper without an MBA.
Thank you

Kim N. Campbell This question came up during a twitter chat today and I want to pose it here; Do employers hire you for your proven results or your ideas? I'm sure there's a bit of both...but are they given equal weight? And how do blogs help you build more "proven results" to strengthen your profile entering the job market.

Christina Brown: Ideas with grounded results to back it up. I really hope that is what they look up in a future employee.

I believe this generally applies:
they hire you for your general competencies, that are the basis on which you will build up, your potential.
Then comes your motivation for the position and the company's mission.
Last but not least, they look for a match between your personality and company's people, if you are a pleasant person to work with.

Jessica Schanberg What do you do with your ego, your hurt ego, when no one comments, but you know there are readers out there? How do you get comments or feedback AND how do you deal with that feeling of being alone out there?

I'm throwing these ideas at you 'coz i'm gonna be trying this stuff for my blog too. i haven't worked seriously on my blog as yet , I'm shortlisting a few ideas & sprucing up my profile a bit. i suggest u try (i dunno how) to put a form at the START/TOP of the blog. I'm suggesting this because my day job is lead generation via online mktg and a form on ur own site is tried&tested formula.

Unless scholarships are notably prestigious or large (more than 15000 Euro, perhaps), I'd drop them to save space (but do keep Erasmus, as that has good brand recognition).

What happened in 2006? People will wonder why you had three jobs that year. If they were short-term assignments, that's OK -- but explain it.

Summaries are a delicate balance between what you can offer (features) and what they're going to get (benefits). It's too long now -- I can't quite tell exactly what you want to do next.

If you were to describe yourself in a single headline (based on your experience and also where you want to go next), what would you say? Put that in there, before the summary, so the employer doesn't have to guess.
