Jamie Nacht Farrell I don't hate to travel, but I hate being apart from my husband. I'm unsure if its how I was raised (my parents did not travel for business and were / still are always together) or just that we've only been together for 7 years; regardless - I'm averaging traveling about 20 days out of 30 over a month time. I'm not happy about it; but at this juncture no other option. Anyone else ever feel this way? I almost beginning to resent clients that I'm traveling to; which is awful - any thoughts?

To address over all first; My "home" as I consider it is in South Florida - this is where we own our house. FOr the past 2 years, we've been living in Dallas. I really could care less about being tied to the community here as we are moving home over the next few months (ok, in about 6 months), but it's the 'interim' that sucks and Ihave to travel all the time. When I'm in FL, this will not happen as much, so really - all I need is to develop some patience... not my strong suit. The other side of this is that we've been spoiled; we've always worked together and thus are not only used to being together all the time at home, but at work as well; so this has been a bit more jarring. It seems that many people (I know a lot of consultants) travel from M-TH every week, but we have both made the conscious decision that we would hate that/not to do it.

@Rick - I am definitely keeping my eyes "open" for an opportunity - I actually have several of them and am acting as a COO right now for a business that is looking for me to sign on FT. That said, the job is in Chicago and I'm not willing to move there (or anywhere else but back to FL) for that matter. I've been told by several recruiters, NYU's career coach, etc. that I don't need to take a job afar because based on track record, I should be able to get whatever I want in FL; again - just no patience...and unsure I'm looking to go back to work UNLESS the "team" is the right one as I know I would be taking a large paycut going back to any company in really any role.

@Tom - you definitely dont sound like a DICK ( ; and you are 100% right on looking at different options. I've been doing so and really just need to be patient is key.

@Jen - your advice is perfect...and I'm the itiot - because I "cant say no". I guess this is one area where ambition and money is a downfall. Funny, because I thought I was at a point where I had found a solid "balance" and then BOOM - got slammed with 4 opps I couldn't say no to. What I am going to do this weekend is go through all jobs and schedule out. Good call.

@Jeff - I like the idea of the "lever", that said - unfortunately my areas of expertise are truly training and managing sales and marketing depts; I need to be there. So, while I could make the decision NOT to travel there - it would affect the company and my performance and I'm not willing to let that happen. I do like the idea though and for different types of projects, will definitely employ.

@Thelma - another great idea and we do this usually once / month. When I go to business in FL, we usually stay at the Ritz for a couple days first. In NY, we do the same. Unfortunately, I have 4 weeks of non stop right now and i like to be in Dallas on the weekends b/c I love my doggie almost as much as my husband -hahahaha.

It seems that you have a great business, but if you stop flying around so much and in essence, "stop working", will you revenue stream still come in or would it stop? Taking the time in building such a system would allow you and your husband to enjoy life together, as it's meant to be. Don't want to sound like a salesman here, but I have such an opportunity that is extremely easy. Just takes diligence and persistence. Just something to ponder. Gavin Page My resume is almost everything Elysa Rice's list Says is bad; in http://bit.ly/hYBtjC. Just to confuse more, My resume is everything my profesional job network agency(ITEC Employment), says is important. Are they trying to keep me unemployed, or is Elysa Rice's list of rules, equally as circumstantial to the point of irrelevence also ? Both are good ? Both are bad ? Perhaps you interpreted my words wrong, as my style is direct and honest. I don't tend to coddle or soft soap my candidates or clients. And in effect, you haven't been here for some time, you seemed to have dropped out. I would happy to address you personally, but your question was not asked in a personal manner. But you did take me to task here, and challenge me if not try to malign my well intentioned efforts and that I take offense with.

If you want your resume to be unique, and stand out and represent you well, then you're going to have to write one that is better than the new one you posted, if what is posted is your new resume. It will not serve you well. And that's the truth. Did you come here looking for advice on how to improve your resume or to whine and say you have no skills that are marketable, no papers or qualifications or training, yet you've been working for several years, was it all in vain? Didn't you acquire skills and discover what you're good at and where you want to take this experience and skill set in your next position? You have to know what it is that you want to do, where you want to work and in what capacity. You have to have the desire to make it happen for yourself. You need to market yourself toward some goal or several goals, and your resume doesn't do that.

Elysa Rice's article is skewed and incorrect in her assumptions. And what ITEC is advising you is obviously not working, as you are still unemployed. You seem to be resistant to others suggestions and wish to believe that what you have is as good as it gets. That's your choice. But to call me negative, and malign my good intentions pointedly, and to say my balance is a little off, with that I take umbrage. My reputation and experience is what your are challenging. We may agree to disagree, you can listen to anyone you wish, and discard whatever advice you wish to, but please, it doesn't serve you well when you publicly attack someone. I obviously hit a nerve in you. Sorry you feel this way.

First of all, you don't have a page, you have a third of a page. Thats the part that shows on my screen when I click on the .doc file you sent me. Most people waste two thirds of it with a big address line and an objective that says "to use my people skills in a job that will challenge me... "

You have one third of a page to make me read more. In that one third of a page, you have to tell me who you are. If you succeed, I'll read. I'll read a page, I'll read two or three pages. In fact, I think because people work so hard to make the format look professional, on a one page resume there's so little content in there that it looks awfully pathetic. Sorta like a big white plate in a French restaurant with a 3 oz steak in the middle by itself.

I have about 20 years experience, so my resume is longer - but I also have a half-page of keywords for hits on searches. Don't want them to appear on the print version? Reformat your keywords to 4-point white font.

Hiring managers don't print the majority of the resumes they receive. They print the ones they already like from what they've seen on their computer.

Jessica Bahr I have to say, for the first time I experienced a problem with tattoo's in the workplace. Not mine, but a co-workers. We work in a corporate business casual setting. A female co-worker has a tattoo on her chest and intentionally wears low cut shirts positioning it so half the tattoo is showing. She said it was so people wonder what the other half was, and therefore wonder about her shirtless. She's an intern and I'd like to point out it is going to hurt her professionally, but not sure how to.

Here's the part about your coworker that concerns me. It's not the tattoo. It's not the location of the tattoo. It's the statement she made about getting a tattoo on her chest so "people wonder about her shirtless." It's the fact that she made that comment to someone she works with (and I'm assuming she said it while she was at work?) And it also should be a red flag that she is wearing low-cut shirts, to further illustrate that she has a tattoo there (and presumably, to make coworkers wonder about her shirtless...)

If that's the case, her actions and comments in a work environment are not very work appropriate, even if the quality of her work is good.

It's so hard when you work with someone who is doing things that could interfere with their career or doing things that border on HR violations in the workplace. Then you have the internal struggle over whether or not to approach the person about it. Sometimes, I've found that it's actually easier to approach people about these issues if you are supervising rather than just working with them. Not because of power or authority but because they sometimes are more receptive. (It also depends on your approach and the level of rapport and mutual respect, though.)

In this case, it doesn't sound like you were close to this person or that you were her supervisor/manager, and now that she's moved elsewhere and is continuing to produce quality work, maybe it's not an issue anymore. I do know for a fact though that there would be many companies that would see red flags in her behavior, so hopefully she'll correct it before it hurts her down the road.
