Ryan Healy Is it just me or do you guys think "work/life balance" is a totally outdated paradigm? Why would you want to separate work from your life?

The important thing is to remember that there is a difference between "work" and "vocation." For those with a vocation, I can see how it might be easy for lines to blur. But I believe that the majority of the population does not have a vocation. And if you only work, even if you consider it a career, then your fulfillment will come from outside of your job and it makes sense to keep the two separate.

At times, I think I have balance in my life. I am able to adequately manage the things at work while still maintaining my lifestyle (ex: going to the gym, seeing friends, traveling etc) but there are also times when I don't have it and am not able to do those things. While its not ideal, I know that when I don't have great balance that it will come back, but if it goes on for too long of a stretch then I know I need to either do or say something to fix it.

Whether its friends or professional, I always feel the need to have to contact a TON of people. Its a constant struggle of figuring out who I should be including on what and why and then I get the gripes and the qualms after the fact from certain people who were not included. You win some and you lose some I guess, but people always like to be in the know.

Ryan Paugh I don't consider myself to be a Journalist although I did go to school to be one. I graduated from Penn State with a degree in Journalism, but ended up working in the world of Corporate Communications then moved onto my Community Director job at Brazen. Even though I didn't end up being a Journalist I still think my major prepared me for a lot of challenges I face as a communicator. Anyone else graduate with a Journalism degree but not become a Journalist? Did it still help your career?

I'm not worried about Ty thinking ill of my opinion, but he's reacting without reading and blowing out of proportion things I'm saying. When I replied to try to explain that he'd misconstrued my point, he (ironically) replied saying that I wasn't getting his point. I don't think that re-explaining what I've already explained will somehow seduce Ty into considering other points of view or thinking critically about what is being said, so instead of arguing with a brick wall, I remove myself from the debate. That's all :)

Ryan Paugh One of our Brazen Interns just asked me a series of questions about Ethics for one of his Journalism classes. Do you think that Social Media is redefining Journalism Ethics? I was a little stumped by this question. I think that the major rules still apply, but there are a lot of new grey areas. For instance, is reporting something that you heard on Twitter ethical? How do you know that what people are tweeting is true?

I also would add that I think everything out there is fodder for journalists -- it just needs to be handled wisely by trying to verify and qualifying. If you think a tweet is relevant to a story, you need to say it was in a tweet and let the public do its job of deciding what that information is worth, similar to how you should say whether someone wrote something or said something. No I don't think we should rely on Twitter solely for anything, but we should include it either in our background research or as one of many sources in a story where it is relevant. I believe ignoring social media altogether might be more irresponsible than using it!

Kendall Walters I'm a jouranlism student and I'm doing a research paper on how journalists use social media: both in the newsroom and to brand themselves. Cameron Plommer I have a problem letting go of my thoughts after the work day is over and I should be devoting time to my personal life, mainly my girlfriend. I have such an urge to write and put my thoughts down on paper. Its just hard for me to let it go until the next day. However, I have found that loading my ipod w/ a large amount of music that I love and going for at least a 30min-1 hour walk or run at the end of the day completely refreshes me. I am a full time working Mom who never really 'shuts off' and taking even 30 min to walk and listen to music completely clears my head. I have been amazed at how clear my head gets during this time and all the ideas that come to me. Ed, that's great! It's so key. Also if you have ever read "The Four Agreements" by Don Jose Luis Ruiz his last agreement is the best:
