About Me

Doug is an entrepreneur but a little different from the norm. He created while working inside a media company.
Doug founded NPR's "Next Generation Radio and grew NPR's "Intern Edition." Next Generation Radio was the external "boot-camp" primarily targeting college students of color and put on at the annual conferences of minority journalists and college media associations. Intern Edition came out of NPR's intern program. Starting in 2000, Doug devised a hands-on means to have young people organically grow their own radio and then multimedia program. College students from all majors had the opportunity to conceive, develop, report, edit, record and produce their own NPR-style program and their own, specially designed, engagement website. college media association
Also, Doug is a personal mentor/agent to dozens and dozens his former students as they search, land and maintain their careers. The guiding principle is to give people the skills and understanding they need to compete for positions and then keep those relationships.
Doug is a Dow Jones Newspaper Fund Alumni. In 1997, he was awarded a Knight International Press Fellowship to Santiago Chile, In 2003, he returned to Chile under the US State Department Visting Professor grant and in 2007, Doug was awarded a William S. Fulbright Scholarship, also to Chile. Doug helped La Universidad Catolica de Chile in Santiago develop and launch an internet radio station designed to have students learn online multimedia journalism and radio programming.
In 2009, "The Public Radio News Directors Inc", "The Native American Journalists Association" and "UNITY: Journalists Of Color" each recognized Doug for his work in bringing many new voices to media, especially public radio. His guiding principle is to give people the skills and understanding they need to compete for positions and then keep those relationships. The mentoring doesn't stop because the project is done. It's just getting started.

With a generous grant from Ford, we'll develop and manage four hands-on boot-camps for each of the UNITY partner associations in 2010. Each boot-camp will take place at the associations annual conferences. Teams will be competitively chosen. One team per UNITY partner association project will awarded no less than $5,000 in start-up funding. Overall, each selected team will walk away with a viable business plan, ideas on how to raise capital and make their idea sustainable.
