Doug Haslam Hi all-- not sure if you folks have seen Help a PR Pro Out. The effort is designating Feb 19 as "Happo" day for job-seeking PR pros and "champions" (experienced PR pros like myself) to all get together, via Twitter and blogs. I guess it's kind of like a job fair, especially if hiring companies get into the act. Here's the site: http://helpaprproout.com/ Here's my post: http://doughaslam.com/2010/02/09/help-a-pr-pro-out-day-february-19/

Ryan Healy What do you guys think of Mark Zuckerberg claiming that if he created Facebook today he would make user data public by default rather than private? http://bit.ly/4LSyfR

While I agree with Zuckerberg, that if he started FB now it should be public by default, this is a huge change to what FB is. Brazen is public by default bc we are a professional site, where you do professional things. FB started as a very social site, especially in the early days. People post drinking photos, etc.

I think this move will help legitimize FB as a "clean cut, safe" network, but this could hurt its user base and also opens the door for a new purely social network to come into the picture.

Ryan Paugh What mobile apps are you using to manage your Twitter account on the go. I use Tweetie 2 for my iPhone and it was definitely worth the couple bucks I spent to get it.

Kate Scoptur Does anyone have tips on where I can find salary information for PR jobs in Madison? I'm looking for some salary comparisons for a PR/Communications Director in Madison with 5 or less years of experience. Thanks!

JR Moreau After graduating, I found PR jobs hard to come by and even harder to get an interview for. PR firms seemed VERY difficult to get an in with, at least in Boston. What are some tips that you find are useful for getting hired in PR? Do you see a future for people saying "screw it" to the ridiculous hiring process and just trying to be freelancers?

I'm very much in the same boat you're describing; a recent grad looking for an entry-level opportunity. Did you find any paid internships that have helped you build your experiences?
@Ashley That's a direction I'm starting to persue, but this year especially Non-profits are less willing to take risks with their program budgets; communication budgets invariably are the first area they cut, not leaving much room for new hires.

If you can work on something and have some deliverable at the end of the day or at the end of your term, then it's worth your time. Plus getting paid a little bit of money means it's more worth your time than retail.

Erica Manney How does how many followers I have show loyalty or engagement? Do you look at more in-depth numbers like amount of re-tweets or lists you are on?

I usually have some measurable actions on a site apart from sales. It might be RSS, e-mail signup, a polling or trivia question, a comments section, or like/dislike feature. It might be a pain in the butt to set up conversion tracking on all such things...it's up to you.

Doug Haslam Content is important but connections are more so. Be part of conversations and the participants and followers of such will follow and engage with you. Just remember to add value in any comment you make. As for finding followers, look at people you know and who share your interests and see which of their followers may interest you, and follow them. Also, check out their Twitter lists (new feature) for ideas on people to follow.
