Penelope Trunk What do you think about changing your last name when you get married? I can't believe people do it, actually. I mean, you have an established track record in the workplace by the time most people get married. Why undermine yourself by telling people to call you another name? I have had so much trouble with my own name changes (people googling the wrong name, for instance) I can't believe people bring this on themselves. the practice strikes me as antiquated.

It had a lot to do with forging my own identity.

In a historical sense, surnames used to be a lot more descriptive of a person, which is why most surnames translate into medieval professions, locations, and traits.

Penelope Trunk I'm struck today by how much more effective it is to ask a question on Brazen Careerist than it is to make a statement. I am starting to think that social media is amazing for training us on how to ask good questions. Because that's how to start a conversation. I wonder, though, do you guys think the best blog posts are asking a question? I don't generally ask questions on my blog. But now I'm wondering....

I don't think that asking a question is de facto the way to get more responses or more traffic. (And if you don't believe me, post something controversial, and don't ask anything at the end of it. Comments will be aplenty.)

When I am legitimately curious of what others thing about a specific topic I will end with a question. But I still get comments even if I do not, and I welcome them.

I think a blog is about sharing what you want to share...whether that be a question, an observation, or a photo of a squirrel.

Ty, more and more I admire your take on things.

I also think it matters how you ask a question. Like Vincent said, sincerity goes one heck of a long way towards getting comments and more.

I like the question-posts too (case in point right here!) but would equally respond to an engaging thought or post that didn't have an overt question involved. You're right, Penelope, in that social media is teaching us how to ask better questions -- and be better writers.

Sophie Carter so I've just started my blog (www.sophiebcarter.blogspot.com) and am getting a kick out of having somewhere to write about things i'm passionate about. do you have any tips about how to keep motivation up while you're still letting people know about your site? I haven't told a load of people yet (first because I was building confident about posting online, then because i don't know how to do it politely), but while I start letting them know I also need to write some decent fodder!

Keeping up the motivation is difficult after the first couple months. It gets easier though because as you have readers, they will encourage you or you'll be talking to someone and they'll tell you that they read your blog and it's someone you never in expected, so that will motivate you. I do find woothemes a bit iffy and you still have to wade through their forums or ask them for help if you get technical glitches.

Thankfully, I've got a designer who will (eventually) take over my site design. It's gratis work so I have to be patient. Meanwhile, I've had to stick to a free WP theme that has the least technical glitches of all I've tried so far.

My thoughts:

I got an Astak E-Book reader for the following reasons:

1) Battery life can be measured in weeks, as opposed to hours for the iPad

2) Integrated SD card reader, unlike the iPad and the Kindle

4) 16 Gb SD card capacity, as opposed to none for the iPad or the Kindle

5) Can read CHM format (which comprises half my ebook collection) as opposed to the iPad and Kindle that can't.

6) $199.95 as opposed to $259 for a Kindle DX and $499 for the iPad.

7) Weighs 210 grams as opposed to 680 grams for the iPad Wi-Fi and 540 grams for the Kindle DX.

In the end, I want something to read ebooks. I don't need Wi-Fi, 3G, a digital camera, an MP3 or movie player, or other applications that are running on a moble phone OS.

As for the learning curve, call me a curmudgeon, but the most important thing is that you post good content everything else comes with time. It does no good to have a slick looking blog and a sweet newsletter setup if you have nothing to post.

Once you have content, it becomes a matter of configuring the content so that it works with the tools you have. That becomes infinitely easier when you know more about you, your content, and your readers.
