Ryan Healy My undergrad degree is in accounting, and it was definitely one of the best decisions I have ever made. I wouldn't consider myself an accountant, but when you're running a business, you need to understand the finances at a basic level at the very least. Plus, if you're not a developer or designer, you need some kind of hard skill when you start a company. Anyone else use their accounting background/knowledge for their small business or start up?

Sara Gallagher Something embarrassing happened to me today. I was catching up with an old friend and she was asking me about my blog. I told her that it was part of my effort to establish a "personal brand" online, yada yada. Then she asked: "so what is your personal brand?" Ha! I had been so busy trying to follow the steps to create an online presence (blog, tweet, comment, read, converse) that I never thought about how I would describe my "brand" succinctly to a friend...an "elevator speech" if you will.

I write a blog called "Gears and Shifts" that discusses the workplace experience and career dynamics. It's not career advice, per se, because I tend to be more analytical and descriptive than prescriptive.

If I had to pare down my brand even further, I would say that I want to be known as someone who sees things other people don't see. That's why I used the term "circumspect observer."

Kayla Zajec When the opportunity for a promotion was offered to me in January, I jumped at it. As any prepared, dedicated, and career focused individual, I did my homework. Clearly knowing my current role, the role I was acting at, and the role that I was being offered. Yet when the "Promotion" came to offer, it was not an increase in compensation, simply a title change. what have you done in this situation?

The point of the assignment was to choose a job you really wanted then come up with how you would define your "brand" in respect to the role. We did a SWOT analysis on ourselves/the industry which was an excellent exercise. We had to come up with a feature & benefit of how we would add to the organization and write about why we'd be a good fit. My favourite part was called "Communicating MY Brand" where we talked about how dress, behaviour, and communication methods affect personal branding. A fabulous self-discovery!
