Donovan Chandler Hi everyone. I'm sorry I didn't get to have one last beer with you all, but I'm excited to announce that I've found a job! I'm actually already working from Oakland CA. It's a great position with a great company. Joshua, I think I owe it to your Information Interview strategy. I evangelize it to everyone looking for a new position!

Firstly, I have to credit Joshua Waldman at http://careerenlightenment.net/ for the basic concept. I looked for a link to send you to but couldn't find one. It might actually be part of his course materials, so I'll just give it to you in a nutshell.

If you ask for an interview, you immediately frame the interaction as a high-stakes conversation. You probably don't want that, and the hiring manager probably doesn't want to deal with it either. You're much more likely to get a positive response if you merely ask for a short discussion about his/her role at the company.

Sure enough, everyone I asked agreed to my request. At that point, I found that I got a lot of helpful information that helped me determine my fit for the job and the best way to apply. And, perhaps more importantly, it established a personal connection within the company. In my case, the person I "interviewed" ended up going directly back to the company and advocated for me! It doesn't need to be a hiring manager that you approach. In fact, that person told me he was too busy.

Joshua provided additional suggestions and template messages, but hopefully this gives you the basic idea.

Scott Shrum How do you make sure that grad school doesn't suck up all of your time? Do you still make time for your hobbies? You should be! Just read a great blog post from a fellow Brazen Careerist member on this very subject: http://bit.ly/bdi8Cp Do you have any tips for making sure your grad school responsibilities don't interfere with other important aspects of your life?

It helps to make sure you get OUT of the environment for a while and engage in something else, as long as you can keep those type A tendencies from taking all the fun out of it. When my MBA program starts taking over my life, I try to pause and focus on who I want to be as a well-rounded person and recognize that I'm not defined by school alone.

I've finally (after many months of huge amounts of stress and strife) gotten to the point where I prioritize my hobbies/interests in an effective way. I focus on these activities as ways to rejuvenate and relax, and it ends up making me more effective at work and at school.

I schedule my workouts in my calendar (not exactly a new tip, but a good one), and - this is key - I don't beat myself up if I miss one. I also set and communicate limits on homework/study time. I'll tell my husband that I have to work on homework until a certain time, then I make sure to put everything away and just unplug from it. That has made a world of difference in my stress levels and in our relationship. Even though I still spend a lot of time on school, this seems to help.

To make sure that my job doesn't interfere with my other hobbies I make a concerted effort to disconnect from my computer during specific hours of the day.

I'm sure this is similar for Grad School students. In order to get away from your studies, the best thing to do is to put yourself in an environment where you can't study.

Milena Thomas One of the nation's foremost experts on interest rates, James Grant, his issued a prospectus for US debt. Huge surprise, he did not rate it AAA. He is also betting yields will not just rise, but "rocket" once the world finally digests how much less creditworthy the US has become. My advice? Start buying guns, tobacco, and toilet paper. http://www.ritholtz.com/blog/2010/04/james-grant-u-s-treasury-yields-lik...

With the Triple A rating, I don't everything that goes into it but with its non-profit equivalent (AM Best), I know that having lots of money in the bank is part of that. It makes sense for corporations to have lots of money in the bank, especially insurance companies like Berkshire Hathaway and AIG. It doesn't necessarily make sense for countries to keep tons of cash in the bank for a rainy day. The trick is how much to keep and how much to spend.

That's a long way of saying that I would think that a company having a Triple A rating is probably a good thing but not necessarily true for a country.

The other link was interesting and does help demonstrate that if you ask 2 economists a question, you'll get 3 opinions :)

Today when I was reading Penelope Trunk's blog, I couldn't help but wonder how cool it would be to be able to listen to it as a podcast. I wonder if the video blog and the podcast are the final destination for bloggers. I think in the case of Penelope's blog it would be cool, but is it the way that everyone should eventually go given the ever increasing on the go, portable media powered pace of our world?

This is the big question print media has been facing - do I make a podcast? a blog? do I need to be on paper and online? video?

We all can read quicker than someone can talk so it takes longer to receives the same information. I think the video blogging is becoming as misused as power point if the person is just talking.

I've asked why people video blog and the answer is for a more personal connection with the reader. Given that, video blogs should be 30 seconds so the reader can see the blogger, hear them talk, and that's it.

Josh Allan Dykstra By the looks of the Methodology, it seems to me like this list is more of where Gen Y employees DO work, not necessarily where they WANT to work. I know this is kind of a nuanced distinction, but might help to explain the polarizing opinions here. To measure the desires of a generation is a tall order, even for a community like Brazen who certainly has a finger on the pulse. Not to mention the "Green Score" was the only criteria that included a potential Gen Y "value" in the measure...

My biggest qualm is that, Gen Y values global citizenry. While some of the companies listed have taken major steps, toward being a admirable global citizen, there are a few on the list that are lacking.I know it takes a while to change the culture of a company, however the list should also reflect this. Unless of course I missed the memo that announced that Gen Y stopped caring about that stuff.
