Jamie Nacht Farrell I'm consulting for a company right now that "says" they're a start up because it's a 2.5 year old business with large investors and not profitable. I've only interacted with this team three times in person, and probably 10 over the phone. They're not "start up" executives. Have you been able to distinguish between "start up" executives and corporate executives? I think I have. Interested to hear your take on what went down today and any advice on how to handle: http://bit.ly/908G86

Ryan Healy Fascinating quote from Peter Thiel about the ridiculousness of today's higher ed system ""People can't do anything entrepreneurial or innovative or even nonprofit—anything that's not safe and well-paying—because they have this mountain of debt. And so education is something that has become a retardant to technological innovation and progress, even though the common perception is the exact opposite." I completely agree. Here's the link: http://www.mcclatchydc.com/2011/01/18/106949/study-many-college-students...

In my experience the best business educators are not in the classroom unless you go to an elite school. They are partners of companies you used to work for. A former manager who started a consulting firm. A friend's coworker who has been running a startup for a year. A ex-class mate who has worked in ibanking for 5 years. Even a venture capitalist who blogs every day. So to say that education is a golden ticket I think is far from the truth... but this is business education I'm talking about. Granted there are some great baseline theories that b-school teaches.

IMHO I disagree that you need education in the subject matter in which you are going to conduct your startup, it doesn't have to be institutional education, you can teach yourself.

Note: I'm referring to business education, not tech/science education which is absolutely necessary for those types to know, it's much more of a specialty.

That is correct, Raquel. The original meaning was tied to immigrants who came here fleeing persecutions of various sorts. Here they could worship as they wished, be a minority and be free (so they thought) and for those who came from countries with royalties and caste systems, they could indeed rise above their current class by working hard in America.

That meaning, as someone alluded to in the discussion above, has since been perverted by Wall Street and Madison Avenue to mean "own a house and a car, have a dog and 2.5 kids."

I understand tall poppy syndrome to be being jealous or wanting to undercut someone because they are more successful. My boss didn't care about the vendor's success. He just felt that those gifts had to be paid for somewhere and that money was coming from the vendors clients, i.e. they were buying their own gifts. My boss looked at it and thought that the product would be that much cheaper without the gifts.

As far as cities, I was being a bit facetious. I have no desire to live in cities or even be in them for the most part, but I don't begrudge people who do get those feelings you described. I live on the outskirts of Fort Collins (about an hour north of Boulder), which is a small city and even here I feel cramped.
Greetings, from a fellow Eagle Scout.

Joe Osborne Hey Guys, I'm helping my Mom with her business and we're looking for ways to sell items online - specifically t - shirts, keychains, mugs, etc. We do all the designs, have our own screen printer, and order direct from the supplier, but our website (www.parrotia.net) isn't equipped to take orders (we mostly work with businesses, not individuals). I've looked at ebay, but they charge a lot. Any other ideas? Any suggestions are appreciated, thanks!!

Also, you offer a visual product. I checked out the site. You should really work to get some more pictures up!! People totally picture shop (just like window shopping, but online) and that's what makes the sale...

What's missing is an online site where you can plan and rent all your needs for do-it-yourselfers. So here's my idea that you're free to steal - create a site, like SomethingBorrowed.com and list all the items that one needs for a wedding (place settings, table cloths, candles, lights, etc. etc.) that people can rent (ala RentTheRunway.com) for a specified time period and return when they're done. Supplement it with a lot of wedding content and ideas/inspiration.

If you are feeling unproductive and you start going back over things you have already solidified ask yourself.. What have I done for sales today. Or what have I done to get my line out there more... Seems I am not alone in this experience.

@Angelo as many of the others have said, the "insanity" others mention seems to really be just a difference of thinking or behavior from the norm. I agree with most here, entrepreneurs are, by nature, different.

I enjoy the paradigm explained in the book E-Myth. There are three types of people, Entrepreneurs, Managers, and Artists. Entrepreneurs, by nature, thrive on taking risk. They are afraid, just like everyone else, but they take the risk anyway.

To complete; Managers are driven by organization and systemization, and ultimately optimization at the measurable level.

Artists are driven by quality production, always striving to make it bigger, better, more, etc.

All three skills are required for a business at all times. Often one person fulfills multiple roles (e.g. I am currently the manager and entrepreneur of my company.) This is not ideal, since working outside of one's core ability leads to stress and eventually burnout.

Elizabeth Williams I launched my professional photography career (as a freelancer) in March, but I'm already starting to daydream about the day I can open my own studio. Build Website b. ? c. Profit It's better than GOB Bluth's idea of a business model, but still. Where does one start? What does one need?

David is correct - hiring employees that can be trusted within a culture of autonomy is ideal. In reality, however, things happen: employees go rogue; they get caught up in the mystique that is online dialogue and forget their manners, etc. The goal of an organization's social media policy (or at least the few I've created) is to create a framework that is extremely vague and basically lays out common sense. The real value in such a policy comes out when things go south. In a lot of the situations I've seen (but not been involved with) is borderlines of plausible deniability. ;-)

Regardless, I agree with David that it's better to keep teams/groups small and hire well.
