Having lived through a war in my teens (Balkans) I found it unimaginable that an East Coast event would affect classes in California, so we went. I was wrong. Few people that showed up spent some time discussing structural implications of the crash in the typical fashion of an architectural class. Then I went home, stopping to buy a selection of my favorite foods and a bottle of wine, made myself a feast and went to bed, never turning on the TV. I did not want to deal with a potential of another war.

If you could go to: http://www.killerstartups.com/eCommerce/goldhat-org-a-community-site-for... and vote on this review I may be able to save a few bucks on advertising and may catch the eyes of someone who might want to fund the project! I've uploaded oodles of .pdf versions of books plus the stuff I order through B&N.com and I've expanded the memory to 16mg (I think that's how much is there). I love being able to brag about carrying around over 100+ books at any given time; I've turned several people onto the Nook (and e-readers in general). It's a pretty spiffy thing to have.

My thoughts:

I got an Astak E-Book reader for the following reasons:

1) Battery life can be measured in weeks, as opposed to hours for the iPad

2) Integrated SD card reader, unlike the iPad and the Kindle

4) 16 Gb SD card capacity, as opposed to none for the iPad or the Kindle

5) Can read CHM format (which comprises half my ebook collection) as opposed to the iPad and Kindle that can't.

6) $199.95 as opposed to $259 for a Kindle DX and $499 for the iPad.

7) Weighs 210 grams as opposed to 680 grams for the iPad Wi-Fi and 540 grams for the Kindle DX.

In the end, I want something to read ebooks. I don't need Wi-Fi, 3G, a digital camera, an MP3 or movie player, or other applications that are running on a moble phone OS.

Vickie Elmer I just wrote a blog post about some ways to use your email or comment sig to sell yourself - or your business. The post is here: http://www.glassdoor.com/blog/email-comment-signature-sell/ I'm reworking my sig as a result of this. Before I do, I'm wondering how you use your sig as a marketing tool for your blog, and what results it brings. Share specifics on the wording and the outcomes, if you will please.

William Bryan An article today was talking about Personal Brand Equity. The thing that stood out to me was what they called the personal brand position statement. The 4 key elements to this is 1) identifying a target market by niche. 2) Choosing Personal attributes and characteristics that define how the individual wants to be perceived. 3) defining the technical skills he or she wishes to highlight. 4) conveying what makes him or her different. What is your brand statement? And does your blog reflect that?

Rebecca Thorman I am not a fan of the image of a tortured artist and the prevalent paradigm of creatives moseying along until inspiration strikes and that they are the chosen for such talent. Real success has nothing to do with that and everything to do with hard work. Then focus on getting some actual REVENUE. Then focus on PROFIT (this may be a part of step 2!).

Business plans, investors, all of that administrative stuff comes later. Get something out the door first.

As for finding developers the only tools you need are Google, LinkedIN, Twitter, and LOTS of perseverance.

While mentors and mentees get close and friends give each other advice, these are distinct relationships and I'm unsure how to combine them. I've installed a CRM package & now trying to determine how detailed to define my services. I've looked at service catalog templates and think that's too much. @Carol, What were those lessons exactly?
@ Ted, I face this problem at the moment, i went into a field and realized that Its not the one for me, I am in it just to get some "professional" experience, I have decided to go into a different field. even though the professional experience has nothing to do whith the businesses i plan to start, and i see no value of such experience. Times are tough, and the luxury of being picky about where i would work does not exist at the moment.

however, surprisingly, Working for someone else has given me time to think about my plans for the future, and research thoroughtly the ideas i want to develop.

I learned it from Mike Dillard here:

http://nmccallum.blackbeltrecruiting.com

If you want to opt in to the free intro messages you will find value in them. The Blackbelt Recruiting course is well worth the $125 or so if you decide to go and buy the actual course. Money back if you don't think so. This course changed my business overnight- because it brought a change between my ears.

It has to do with control, posture, and human psychology. When you do the "take away", people realize they are not in control, and then they wonder what they are possibly missing out on. I tell people no all the time and I love it. Works for me and thousands of others who are using it!
