Good stuff Jackie; thanks!

An engaged online audience can absolutely become further engaged by physical contact. However, one of the biggest reasons for social media's growth for business is that it allows companies to connect with lots of people inexpensively. So, to travel the world to 'hug' all of your community members would probably not be possible for most organizations, but here are a few ideas that can have a similar effect:

1) Invite members to a casual event. Even if a liaison for the company cannot actually attend, facilitating a networking event like a happy hour or a baseball game for members of the community to high five each other can go a long way in strengthening their bond with you and your community.

2) Phone surveys. Giving someone a voice to connect with will not only strengthen emotional ties, but uncover new opportunities and allow you to better understand your audience.

3) Send hand-written letters. Don't worry about your agenda or call to action, just having something physical that shows that your a person, not a faceless organization or name to rally behing. Hand written is key, keep it simple. Often, contributing members of social communities thrive on recognition - a small thank you can be huge.

However, we can foster relationships so that when the time comes for that actual physical interaction comes (whether it be they order a physical product, attend an event, or walk in a store), that interaction is even more impactful.

@Lindsey - Haha, glad I could help you think through some stuff out loud! That is definitely one of the coolest advantages of social media. In real life, you'd never be able to step into a conversation and help a customer out. But now, you can easily search for these complaints/questions about your product and offer your assistance.

@Will - Great examples! You're definitely right that actually traveling around in hopes of reaching all of your customers in person isn't feasible, but these are all great ways of still being able to give them that offline experience of your brand.

Brittany Thompson How can we accurately predict what will make us happy? At some point, most of us have overestimated our desire for something (or someone) and later realized that it wasn't what we wanted after all. Author and Harvard professor Dan Gilbert says it's all genetic; that humans have evolved in a way that lets us perceive happiness even when things don't go as planned. (Hear him talk at Ted.com here: http://bit.ly/cKB5Uf ) Do you agree or disagree? Why?

@David - wow, love the quote: "Somewhere in the pursuit of happiness, we can stop and be happy along the way."

@Jamie - I think that's common, to think something will make you happen - and it does, for a little while. But then that fades, and you start looking towards the next thing that will make you happy.. It becomes a cycle for a lot of people. Not that it's "wrong" to live that way or constantly seek happiness in your life, but I do notice that when I observe the people around me, the happiest and most confident people are often the people who have taken the time to slow down and just live. They are not constantly pondering their next big idea that will surely bring them lasting happiness, and they never stress over how to make it happen. They are content with their daily existence and, even when faced with stressful situations, they are resilient and never seem to stay stressed for long.

One thing I did think of while reading these replies: there is a time and place for everything and the same could be said about unhappiness. Sometimes, it can be a trigger, providing the motivation you need to do whatever it takes to bring happiness back to your life. If you are in an unhealthy situation, an unhappy marriage, a dead-end job, is it better to think happy thoughts and try to find ways to change your view on the situation so you can try to be happy with your life? Or is it truly time to make a change and move towards a life that provides true happiness?

For instance, I think of all the social change that comes from people who have finally come together and said, "This situation is NOT okay. We are NOT happy with this." And worked together to change it.

TOP IDEA: Sadya Siddiqui Shakespeare & Gen Y: instead of having a TO DO LIST , maybe its time we had a TO BE LIST. my theory is that if i cannot match each item on my to-do list with my to-be list , then something on each list is either redundant or missing. For example: To do list item: send cv to 2 recruiters...corresponds with....To be list item: to be part of a better work environment. To be or not to be that, indeed, is the question- Shakespeare its seems was a personal development guru of his time.

Cameron Plommer I want get feedback on an idea I have I think a lot of high school and college grads are at a real disadvantage when they enter the real world. School ignores so many practical skills and doesn't push students to be remarkable. I'd like to set up some kind of school, workshop or program that gives students the information, resources and motivation to be remarkable people. Which in turn will hopefully lead to better people and employees. Thoughts. Criticism. Business partners???

Thanks everyone for the feedback, I really appreciate it!
@David, I've had real problems quantifying investor relations activities since every day is so different and raising money is something CEOs usually take credit for. Like for the client I helped while in the Senior Associate position to launch a campaign using its customers; it helped the client, which was a cable channel, to stay in a certain market which had 3 million viewers. Investor relations is a day-to-day function that allows companies to raise money and maintain fair stock valuation, but it's rarely a heroic, individual process. You work on a team with the CEO/CFO and it's hard to know what impact anything has because the market's always moving and buyers and sellers never tell you when they're dumping a position and you never know ahead of time why they will sell, or if it has anything to do with you or their agenda. Fund managers NEVER share that information because if they did, I could possibly tell their competitors about that information and impact that manager's strategy. IR is a position where you have to react a lot to what the market's doing, and getting companies in front of fund managers and investment banks IS being proactive. I'm not sure how I'd word that in a way that makes it seem like I'm hyping up what are the expected duties of someone in my position. IR people make sure companies comply with SEC regulations. Also, I can't reveal a lot because of confidentiality agreements I've signed. I've asked a lot of friends in IR for their resumes to see what I can do differently. It's a very tough job to quantify. Honestly, you never really know if what you're doing is working or not. CEOs consider IR to be a necessary evil. It's not a typical advertising, marketing, sales position. What I do is very niche and I've yet to find people who understand it enough to help me sell myself on the resume. So, I'm trying to figure it out myself.

However, instead of saying how many credits you've completed, just put expected degree date.

I find that you have impressive skills, but it's disorganized, and hard to find. Also, I think you need to really think about your job from a third person's POV. To me "Assisted in day-to-day management of two centers on campus (100+ weekly traffic)" means nothing... what is involved in this day-to-day management? I appreciate your attempt to quantify, but that's about 20 person a day, and without context of what's truly involved in a day-to-day management, 20 person a day doesn't seem that many... Does that mean you have to process a 10-page paperwork for each person, or do you just scan their card and wave them through in 2 seconds? See what I mean?

There's also the issue of credibility. You mentioned that you have published articles... what and where are they published? You don't want to seem like you're stretching. Are you published in a newsletter that you print on your own printer and tape to bathroom stall? That could be totally lame. Or that could be totally awesome if you started it and you really got some recognition for it, and built a community around it. But again, without context, it's hard to understand if that's an achievement, or just puffery. If you have legitimate published articles, list date / publication that they're published.

I'm not sure how your research section is setting you apart. Scour the website nowaday is a very common skill. Those databases are probably irrelevant in corporate setting. Also, I'm not sure database research is relevant to SM.

You're underselling your Twitter connections. Connecting with people on Twitter... that's cool, but unimpressive in this day and age. However, your 800+ follower and 55 lists shows a lot more promise. I would quantify that.

Hi Demetra,

I think the first step is clarifying where you want to help and how you can utilize your skills to help move an organization "using business methods to fulfill a social mission" forward. It sounds like right now, you want to get two mentors, start volunteering and discover what type of work/organization is a good fit for you. After you are clear about that, then I think you can take the next steps to connect with the right people and target your efforts. First, get clear, setup the structures to help you succeed, then take more action.
