TOP IDEA: Maura V. Pingor If I were to chose 1 experience that has had a major influence in whom I am today, I say it's the opportunity I was given to live in & visit differenct countries: when I was 7 my family moved from Argentina to Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. When I was 21 I moved to the US. I have also visited multiple countries. Being exposed to so many different cultures has had a HUGE impact in my life (personally and professionally). Do you have one thing you can point to as a major driver of whom you are today?

Cameron Plommer Do you have a personal website? Is do you own your name's domain? For my job search I set up my personal website and branded it to strengthen my career. If this is something you have been thinking about doing or don't really know how to start, I'd like to offer my services and get you started. Whether it's setting up the domain, hosting, Wordpress, strategizing or writing the copy, maybe I can help your job search out. Tweet, message, or email me if you are interested.

Perhaps you interpreted my words wrong, as my style is direct and honest. I don't tend to coddle or soft soap my candidates or clients. And in effect, you haven't been here for some time, you seemed to have dropped out. I would happy to address you personally, but your question was not asked in a personal manner. But you did take me to task here, and challenge me if not try to malign my well intentioned efforts and that I take offense with.

If you want your resume to be unique, and stand out and represent you well, then you're going to have to write one that is better than the new one you posted, if what is posted is your new resume. It will not serve you well. And that's the truth. Did you come here looking for advice on how to improve your resume or to whine and say you have no skills that are marketable, no papers or qualifications or training, yet you've been working for several years, was it all in vain? Didn't you acquire skills and discover what you're good at and where you want to take this experience and skill set in your next position? You have to know what it is that you want to do, where you want to work and in what capacity. You have to have the desire to make it happen for yourself. You need to market yourself toward some goal or several goals, and your resume doesn't do that.

Elysa Rice's article is skewed and incorrect in her assumptions. And what ITEC is advising you is obviously not working, as you are still unemployed. You seem to be resistant to others suggestions and wish to believe that what you have is as good as it gets. That's your choice. But to call me negative, and malign my good intentions pointedly, and to say my balance is a little off, with that I take umbrage. My reputation and experience is what your are challenging. We may agree to disagree, you can listen to anyone you wish, and discard whatever advice you wish to, but please, it doesn't serve you well when you publicly attack someone. I obviously hit a nerve in you. Sorry you feel this way.

If the profile is not set with correct privacy settings, and the school (or employer) can see it, then it is the one student's fault. They are allowing anyone to see it at that point and are making it public. If the profile has strong privacy settings and doesn't allow anyone to see it, then that student has nothing to worry about.

For LinkedIn - It is ok for schools to check this, because it is suppose to be a professional profile. All it does is adds more emphasis to one's application, because jobs, specialties, skills, etc. are listed.

Cheryl-
Thank you for the information. I think a problem I am having is that I do not have direct experience with the career I would like to begin. I was in the Marines and I am trying to translate what I did there, to what I would do in a normal business environment. My thoughts originally were, if young men and women are graduating with their MBA's right after college, and have no prior relevant work experience, then I will be a step ahead of them because I spent time in the military where I learned many invaluable traits (leadership especial). If my military experience is not 100% relevant to the job that I want, should I not use it in my resume? Should I be listing the MBA courses that I took? Basically, my resume consists of what I have done in the past. I am just having a tough time figuring out specifically what should be changed and how I should change it. Thanks again for your help!

You don't have to include everything you did in the military, just those aspects that relate to your career goals and write it as if it were your business job, be creative about it. The military was just another employer, use them as an employer, don't get hung up on the military aspect. Yes, you may not get the level of job you thought you might deserve, the name of the game is to get your foot in the door first, then you'll rise quickly. No, your education goes at the bottom at your point in life. However, don't make much of the jobs that have no relevance to what your are seeking. You need to start your resume with a Summary or Profile section at the top that tells what makes you unique, what you do and have done in what capacity, how many people you've managed, etc. You have to brand yourself and market yourself in a brief paragraph so they want to read the rest of your resume. Under that comes your Skills: Do you have any computer skills, management skills anything that is exceptional? Then start with your Employment History. Good luck, hope this help. Market your resume toward a job goal.

In these economic times, with budgets being slashed, we have to consider how many students are actually served under any given program.

Yes this is getting long winded and off track, so it's best to move it elsewhere.

Is it by standardized testing to measure the results of accomplishing this? I feel that is something yet to be seen. My personal belief, the whole dang education system needs a rest & overhaul (and our culture vaule education more than it does)!! The question I ask, does the same fundamentals from 30 years ago that were great building blocks apply to today's world? My thoughts are probably not. Definately the teaching styles probably need to be changed as well.
