TOP IDEA: Allison Cheston Are you someone who was a lousy student but has really found yourself through your career? I've been interviewing Gen Y's for my book on helping young adults starting in high school identify their strengths and interests to help plan for college and career. And I've talked to lots of people who were good students. If you were not I'd love to talk with you!

I struggled in high school as I went to a new school each year and also didn't quite mesh with the high school atmosphere/culture. I was really disinterested. I excelled certain courses (particularly the elective classes) but never stayed up on my homework in the important ones. Once I got into the college setting (a comm. college) boy, did I find out how big of a nerd I secretly was! I graduated with high honors and now even sit on the advisory committee as an alumni for the program I participated in. I got a job in my desired industry 2 semesters before graduation and got promoted after 5 months. I totally found my calling through college and career and surprised the heck out of my parents who were weary of my under-achieving high school days.

Kenji Crosland I'm 27, and have prematurely gray hair. I just started working at a web startup where it's not unusual for CEOs to be younger than I am. My parents suggested that I should dye my hair to get rid of all the gray and "look more my age." Not for vanity reasons, but for professional reasons. If I dyed my hair I could look at least five years younger if not more, which could be an advantage in a young industry. Do you think it even matters?

Once you start dying your hair you have to deal with your roots as the dyed hair grows out. As you get more grey, you'll look funny. Best to just accept it now.

Maura V. Pingor Here I was interviewing a candidate for one of my positions, and the candidate starts looking at her blackberry, which she did multiple times. Not sure if she felt entitled because she was an internal candidate, but in my book it's a HUGE no no during any interview. I finally coached her to never take a bb to any interview.. Being late and not being prepared are two other horrible misatkes during an interview. What would you say a candidate should not do during an interview?

The rule at our house is that when we get in, the blackberries are put away! Something more couples and families should consider.

Dane Kim I'll start with the obvious observation of problems in finding entry-level positions: it's a catch 22 between the lack of professional, real-world experience of new grads vs. the saturated market of out of work professionals with several years under their belt. Employers no longer have incentives to train long-term team members from the ground up.

A great place to gain that kind of experience is at a start up, but they'll work your butt off :)

Have you thought about applying to any start ups?

My problem is that the tools used in my industry (Electronics) are specialized and complex. I really can't position myself as being able to perform like a seasoned professional. All I can do is promise to learn fast and work hard.
Are there any resources to specifically find start ups in various industries?
Thanks again!
