Ryan Paugh Hey guys. How about that heat wave? Since the weather is getting nicer and nicer I'm really thinking a lot about putting some Madison Tweet Ups together. I'm thinking that the best way to get started is to create a Brazen/Madison Twitter List. So reply below with your Twitter handle so I can start putting a list of people together.

Michael Felberbaum I've started to believe that as the risk of working for someone else (due to lay-offs and frequent upheaval in the business world) increases, the relative perception of risk in starting one's own business will go down. In other words, it will seem less risky to start your own business because there's no security anywhere else! What are your thoughts on this?

95 weeks ago from Entrepreneurs

Michael Felberbaum: That's really interesting Dale. Thanks. I've heard the term "unintentional entrepreneur" and I think it's a similar idea. It's a great point.

Those that I work with completely agree. There are millions of people out there right now looking to start their own business, and those that are positioned as leaders showing the way will be there to assist them to live the life they dream of if they are willing to put in the focus, determination, and hard work to be coached to success.

Beth Hennes As long as Ryan started me thinking about ethnic restaurants, let's try a little harder... Who has the best Indian food in town? Korean? I've only had take-out from Swagat. The Korean restaurant I tried was New Seoul, but I dunno, maybe there's better...

Stanley Lee In your opinion, do you think recruiting a new member for a small team resembling those making up the "start-up" companies is equivalent in concept of a typical firm's HR and technical teams recruiting a new employee? Also great to hear your explanations. Thanks.

Dale Beermann Is anyone using Basecamp for project management? I'm evaluating it right now and find it really frustrating. I shift milestones and all of the todos are still under the old dates. It's nearly impossible to effectively change a project plan from what I can tell. Does anyone have other suggestions? Pivotal Tracker looks interesting, and it's free. I need something that can do project management and time tracking for consulting gigs.

TOP IDEA: Louis Gray Today's Web services simply move the collection of data to a new place, to be owned and manipulated by proprietary interfaces - whether they call themselves cloud or not. But this increases problems with data ownership and migration. In order for us to truly own our own data and its related metadata, these Web services should tap into our own personal cloud, enabled with our own secure credentials, and not store any of it locally. This would make us truly service and application agnostic.

Or has Facebook already gotten there? Facebook obviously isn't service and application agnostic, but it's becoming the defacto standard via FB Connect.

I like your idea, but wonder how it can be managed effectively without someone owning the data. Maybe we're too far down the FB path to go back.

TOP IDEA: Dale Beermann Engineering is only a means to determine and achieve a particular goal, not the goal in and of itself. Without a product/market fit, it doesn't matter how "cool" a product is. Without a decent user experience, it doesn't matter how "cool" a feature is if nobody can access it. Engineering for engineering's sake is no way to build a company. Leave it to the academics.

Dale Beermann I've been using some of these apps for a while to get a feel for them and the business models associated with them. Hey Adam, let's grab a beer sometime. I implemented a few small mobile apps and could give you some insight into it.

Generally there's just an API for each phone (IPhone/Blackberry) or service provider(Sprint/Verizon - for phones that don't have built in GPS) that your code can call into to get GPS data. You might have to determine the city/street yourself, but the distance calculation isn't hard. You'll just need to work with a programmer to do it.
