Conor O'Kane I haven't used Brazen Careerist in a while.. Nice to see the Singapore group growing though, even if it's a bit quiet ;o) Hello Singapore! Ramadan Mubarak and Happy Hungry Ghost Festival (not sure if there's a greeting/blessing for that one!)

Conor O'Kane Hi all, I'm moving to Singapore on Monday, can't wait! I will be job hunting there.. the market seems okay at the moment, or at least better than Ireland. I picked Singapore because I know people there, the business language is English and it's a great hub for getting to know South-East Asia (and Chinese and Indian culture a little too). Are any of you in Singapore or what is your interest in, or connection with, Singapore? :o)

Valentina Thörner da Cruz Ok, interaction. Here we go: I am German working in a French company in Spain. The other day I talked with the Spanish sales person about how it is so important to invite our partners to build up personal relationships. He asked me if this also applied to German people, because they always seem so uninterested in the meetings. We found out: Spanish people first talk family and then talk business. Germans seem to go down to business right away. Anybody with similar or different experiences?

The German brought along a typed agenda for their coffee meeting. The Irish person was shocked and felt this was too formal since they were "only" meeting for coffee (even though it was to discuss business).

Though I do not consider the lists as agenda, but rather as a memo for myself so I don't forget anything crucial. And I tend to do it in handwriting as not to intimidate the other person. For me personally it helps to clear up my head before meetings (even coffee meetings) by pulling things out of my head onto the notebook.

Conor O'Kane One thought struck me recently.. I used to think that, as a professional and a person, I needed to learn to relate to people in their 40s and older as peers and colleagues who have different cultural and pop-cultural reference points and who are at a different stage in life. Recently I realised that I need to start thinking about Gen Yers in the same way! Talking to someone who is 20/21 is like talking to someone from a different culture sometimes..

Conor, I will consider the capitalization thing. As for graduation date... I've gotten different POV on the subject. Omitting it is vague but avoids age discrimination.
Caroline: I was trying to adhere to some sort of timeline... But I hope in the very very near future, I would be able to put some impressive numbers for my current role... a few things brewing. But point well taken

That's why I've only extended travel invitation to a very very very small and selective group rather than just any old friend / acquaintance...
JESS: I prefer to travel with a friend. I believe that any experience is better if you can share it with someone. Also, I believe in the buddy system. If I take a buddy with me on a hike a few miles away from home, why wouldn't I take one for a trip thousands of miles away. I'm also clumpsy ;)

Conor O'Kane Hi Anette, I'm hoping to move to Singapore in February actually! Part of the reason is precisely what you've mentioned, it really is a gateway to South East Asia in particular. If you want to learn a bit about Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Cambodia/Vietnam/Laos (as well as Burma which I guess is more interesting politically than as a business environment at the moment?) then it's a great spot. I've heard the economy is not great there at the moment but I'm willing to give it a shot!

Hi May,

Not sure how to reply to your reply below, so replying here :o)

Yes, Singapore is already a hot spot for Financial Services - they are really positioning themselves as a centre for private banking and a location for banks to host their shared services centres for AsiaPac in particular.

I've heard it's entrepeneur friendly alright, at least in terms of minimal red tape. Fingers crossed I find some opportunities there! :o)

We're able to mediate between the two generations and more at ease with both than they might be with each other.

Having said all that, I'm a slight sceptic about labelling an entire generation as behaving/thinking a certain way.. I believe people fit better into more specific demographics than just by decade of birth. I know people in their mid-20s who just want to settle down in the one company and people in their mid-30s who will never settle!
