Heather Gaona I'm just returning to Civilian life after 8 years in the Army... and need help with the clothes! I was fashion-challenged before wearing a uniform every day. I work in a lab, so practical clothing is a must. At some point in any day I could be crawling under an instrument or climbing a step ladder. Jeans are widely accepted, but I worry I’ll look unprofessional. My biggest challenge is tops: I tend to prefer tshirts. I welcome your suggestions!

What are your thoughts about this comment: "Many millennials not only don't want jobs, they simply don't deserve them. Chances are, they're as nervous as you, and if you approach them, it's easier to come off as the more confident one. Works for me everytime! Also, something people never told me was that networking events are easier than most people think, because inevitably SOMEONE will start up a conversation with you. Even if you don't want to, someone will do it. Also, follow-ups are KEY.

Erin Lariviere Where do you draw the line between feedback / criticism / venting and downright rudeness or community abuse? I'm a big believer in letting people vent... to a certain extent. People get frustrated and they want to be heard. I think that's ok and it should be allowed. But there are times when it crosses a line. I'm not talking trolls. I mean when there's legitimate feedback, but the delivery goes to far. How do you handle this? Where do you draw the line?

I think having your spouse or significant other behind you is a way of feeling like they prioritize your happiness and goals, and are willing to shift things around to see you through that. It's not always possible from a timing or financial perspective, but emotional support is key, really in any kind of transition.

I think that opposition you speak of about people telling you how wrong your decision is, is more about their own insecurities, narrow minded thinking, and potentially even jealousy. We develop our reasoning behind our actions based on our own individual potential. Stay positive!

@Chris and @Clara--you both sound super busy!

@Chris--what classes are you taking?

@Clara--I would divide all the tasks up into order of priority, and tackle the ones that are absolutely imperative first. For example, if you have a huge project due at work, cut yourself some slack on your blog posting for the meantime, and pick it back up when the work project is complete. I find that for me, this helps me from spreading myself to thin, or getting in trouble when it comes to completing time sensitive tasks.

I hope that helps!

But it seems like you're putting all the responsibility on the manager, here. Why not push some of it back to the employee? It is the employees 'fate' at stake... staff should be more involved in their own tracking, in my opinion. I have two goals this year: More public speaking engagements and more experience with industrial customers. Granted, they are far less than specific but very measurable.

I keep track of every speaking event I've planned, organized, and presented at: dates, times, locations. I also keep track of all my efforts to get more industrial experience: lunch-n-learn seminars I've organized, external training and resources I've secured, new customers I've worked with, and technologies I've helped them to implement.

This way allows me to take the power of the tracking into my own hands - not leaving it up to my way-too-busy boss to "remember" all this stuff when it comes time for my review. I feel that the result of the review is MY responsibility and MY potential benefit - complaining that the boss is too busy is just a cop out, in my opinion.

Raquel Elle Bell How many times have you gone to a networking event, had conversations with interesting people just to never see or talk to them again? Seems like a waste of energy. With networking, it seems that too often the reason for initiating the relationship is either fake, or at least really, really tenuous.

Hiking, rock climbing, strategic games etc. I started playing poker at a local restaurant, I attend or volunteer for charity events or causes, and from all these I started a book club that focuses on strategic thinking, philosophy, history, theory etc...I do not usually attend events that are purely networking for the simple reason that I am a CEO and if I'm going to network it's going to be with other decision makers. My strategy is to put myself in an environment that I enjoy.However, when I do go to events that are purely networking I practice the advice I provided. The reason why is that I want people to see that I am proactive even if they are not. Plus even if I never talk to them again but have them in my network there may come a time where they hear of something that fits what I talk about and push it my way.
