I live with 2 people, 3 cats and 5 mice. I enjoy many things, including cooking, music (listening, not so much making, and I use Rhapsody), reading (can’t possibly list all the books), sailing (when I get a chance), skiing (also when I get a chance), and computer games (ok, yes, The Sims 3). I have no life. Seriously. And I'm a geek.
In the professional world, I was an adjunct biology instructor for Tidewater Community College (Norfolk, VA campus). I loved my job! My students are wonderful (mostly). Although I no longer teach at TCC, I hope to continue teaching Biology 101 somewhere!
Why do I teach introductory biology? Actually, because I want to. Many of my students aren't going to continue their science education much past Bio 101/102, and understanding how life works is really important. The topics we learn about all tie in to our daily lives a little bit. I try to bring in those links to reality when I teach. Understanding life helps you understand what goes on in the news, with medicine and health issues, with inheritance, with politics, and all kinds of other things. Should you buy the $60 vitamin and enzyme supplements? What does it mean when you have cancer? Do eggs really raise your blood cholesterol? Will my child be born with extra fingers? All of these are questions that we address in Biology 101, and this will give you a basic understanding of, well, life.
