One thing I have done is request that such places send me a press release and allow me to turn it into free publicity for trhe firm. However, I can actually do that as I am a small business columnist. But, even if you are not, you can simply refer send the PR to www.budurl.com/TheBIGlbuzzmachine and someone will do the conversion for you.

JRandom42: @Lamar, is that before or after they announce a $3.5 billion quarterly loss and layoffs of 4-12,000 employees? :)

Dave Ellis For the hiring professionals and also the undergrads out there... Do college career centers help people find internships or jobs? In the current economy, career centers are being tasked with ever more duties... mentor, networker, business development professional... some even say "baby-sitter" to millenials who seemingly need to be carried through life. http://bit.ly/dpphyI What do you think? Did / do you utilize a college career center? As a student... as a hiring manager?

The best thing the Career Center did was do a job panel with alumni's. They gave great advice and told us basically...the TRUTH! Plus got some good leads and groundwork for networking. It was the "harsh" reality which made me see that I had to really get out there and sell myself.

Alexandra Levit: The babysitter thing doesn't surprise me, unfortunately. I think the best role for the college career counselor is mentor.

Kelly Seiler I'm "visiting" a company next Wednesday. It is scheduled for 4 hours and they asked me to put together a short presentation so people will get to know me a little better. I'm assuming this is an unofficial interview of sorts, but it's not advertised as an interview and they don't actually have a position for me (however they might make one). So, what do I wear??

It is still in it's infancy, but if I had capitol.. I would invest! I think it is a neat idea! People love to compete.. and people love free and discounted stuff! A good way for companies to get brand recognition using social media.

I believe google (maybe it was FB) has invested a million $$ so far. among others..

All the best,
Aaron

TOP IDEA: Christie Q So many very qualified professionals still loose on the job market but have any of them thought to move outside of their current target market? With that I mean the US? I did and found a good position. Working abroad usually allows you to start in a higher position, companies are clamoring for your experience and knowledge, and you get to prove to your native country that you are flexible. Working abroad broadens the scope of your experience which in turns boosts your resume past the ordinary.

Yes that is a fantastic idea! Nothing against the backpackers and hostile dwellers of the world, but traveling with purpose, or a job in mind is the best way to go!

When you live and work among different cultures you really open a new dimension into your mind.. a different way of thinking. This experience will be very helpful moving forward in your career and your existence.

Do it now, while you can! Many of us are now bound to a certain area (because of negative home equity mostly)for lots of reasons when you get older and more established. The good paying jobs are out there if you have the ability to relocate!

In addition, with skype and video and other technologies it is possible to work abroad from your hometown! Almost all call centers go to India or Malaysia and now Russia.. and we don't even realize it.

Nothing beats the real thing though! I agree with you Christie, there is enormous potential even outside the U.S.

Good Luck and much success!
Aaron
