I use RSS as much as possible so that I can get everything in one spot. Here are a few free tools:
Google Alerts (combined with Google Reader), Boardreader, Boardtracker, BackType, SocialMention.com, Twitter Search on specific terms (again, use RSS feeds on searches).
I also pay $1 a year for BrandsEye (also fed into Google Reader) as a safeguard to make sure I haven't missed anything.
