Reminds me of what I was told by an Alzheimer's caregiver:

"Have Alzheimer's? Meet new people every day! Do new things every day! Experience new things every day! Go new places every day! Have new adventures every day!"

Not politically correct, but given the grim daily life of a caregiver, a little humor is needed.

Ryan Paugh Even though I'm currently living in Madison, WI I'd really love to move back to the East Coast soon to be near more friends and family. I've sold my girlfriend on the idea of coming with me. Her first pick is somewhere in North Carolina. My first pick is somewhere in/around Boston, MA. She thinks Boston is too cold + doesn't have enough of an artsy scene. I guess I'm not really sure. I figured I'd leave it up to the experts. Any thoughts guys?

We have a fine cluster of regional theater with a national reputation. And a fine local music scene.

And a cluster of excellent colleges, Brown University, Rhode Island School Of Design, Johnson & Wales...

North Carolina is nice too, different. Cost of living is less but so are salaries.

Good luck. I lived in WI for two years before returning to RI, don't regret it.

Love Ft Greene--great restaurants, BAM, subway access at Atlantic. I'm just across the intersection there in N. Slope--and it's great and convenient as well. I don't like Williamsburg but that's maybe because I like a real neighborhood feel with architecture and coziness--not industrial. I go there to party but wouldn't live there. I only lived once in Manhattan and that's because they literally paid me to (for work--free apt) but otherwise, I never would have moved there because BK is the place to be!

Tracy Brisson I'm launching a free e-course that will feature 22 short career management and job search lessons emailed to people every 1-2 days. Each lesson takes 30 minutes of reflection. After writing all the lessons- and coming up with a song inspiration for each- I'm having writer's block for a title. I'd love to play off the summer aspect of the timing. If anyone can come up with a title, I'll barter a free hour of Skype-based life or career coaching, as well as credit you in the eCourse. Thanks!

Owen Nwanze Should i disclose my desired salary range if asked? I was contacted by a recruiter who said that I seem perfect for a position at her company. She said she would like to meet with me & asked what salary range I'm looking for. I would like to at least interview with this company, so I am scared that if I tell her a salary range that is higher than what they pay, I might not get an interview. And if I say a low salary range, I might eventually be offered a salary that is lower than what they pay.

Tell her your true desired salary, and say you are OK with going lower for the specific position and tell her why. If she doesn't understand that she's a moron. Sorry if that's harsh, but you should be able to be upfront with a recruiter and have all info be to your benefit. I speak for many recruiters when I say: we need to know your salary history and we need to know the range you would be open to. Knowing your most recent salary is helpful and what you're seeking is important. If you're making $40k but want $60k then you need to tell us why you feel you deserve that increase. Most new positions are offered at about a 5-10% increase in salary.

We also realistically know that if you're making $60k then you don't want to be considered for a position only paying $40k. We've worked with many different candidates.

If you don't trust the recruiter with your salary information then end the call immediately, otherwise, being open and honest with recruiters helps us to help our clients and YOU even better.

Chris Paugh Some companies are now embracing shuteye strategy! I just heard this morning that Ben & Jerry's employees have nap rooms. It is believed that an AM nap improves mental and creative abilities and PM nap rejuvenates you physically. When I work from home, I can see how I could plan some nap time. However, do you think that it really leads to more productivity in the work place and would it work for you and your company? Pros/Cons?

Ryan Paugh I got engaged over the holidays after spending a lot of time waiting for the right moment. Afterward, I realized is that timing isn't everything. I should have proposed a long time ago, but I kept telling myself it had to be perfect. Perfection isn't just about timing. It's also about acting on opportunities to make your life happier. I think that's the same in our careers too. Spend less time waiting for the timing to be right and more time doing what you think will make you happy.

Ryan, Congratulations. Best wishes to the two of you.

I think timing matters some of the time when it involves needs but otherwise, it's a self inflicted thing we do. When to pop the question matters when one side is not ready to move on. When you're both on the same page, one day does not matter out of 70 years of sharing a life.

Rebecca Thorman I am REALLY excited today because I am officially credit card debt-free! It's all paid off and I'm pretty proud of myself. My next step was going to be to pay off my student loans (which have very low interest rates) or maybe my car (which I think has a 6% interest rate), or instead, re-build my emergency fund and then start donating to my Roth IRA again. What do you all think? Get rid of all debt or save a little first?

I sat down with my spreadsheet, worked the numbers and found that I will be able to max out my Roth IRA, fill my emergency fund back up and pay off my car loan completely by the end of next year - so that's the goal. Ryan Paugh I'm so tired of listening to people bitch about Generation Y. This morning I started reading yet another Gen-Y narcissism piece (http://bit.ly/b8lXO5) written by Andrew McAfee. Gag. The thing is, I agree with what he's saying. What really bugs me is that we view things like narcissism as if it's a generational phenomenon when it's clearly a bigger issue. To be fair, the author says he's sick of narcissists young and old (I am too) but the focus is on Gen Y instead of on the bigger picture.

You've heard the term "same shit different day" well it's the same from generation to generation. People don't change.. You'll always have the older generations shaking their fists and screaming those damn kids when in retrospect when they were younger there were old bastards screaming the same thing at them. Seriously, I'm tired of all the Gen Y talk... Seems to me like a smokescreen for what the real issue is, and that's an older generation who refuses to realize that if they are going to stay relevant they are going to have to learn some new tricks.

1 - I second the large projects comment. They have good educational benifits if you can tolerate all the red tape to use them.

2 - I work for a defense contractor that has tons of incentives to be inefficent built into the way they work. There is a lot of the kill the messenger mentality going on. Problems don't surface until they are major problems because no one wants to get yelled at over it. It is easier for managers not to make decisions than to make them. The same meetings (often on conference call) happen week after week... same material is rehashed and no decisions made.

3 - Boss for a day. I would overhaul the budget system. Right now when the budget gets distributed for a major project ~15% of it gets held in reserve. Then when groups run out of money they ask for it out of the reserve. I would change to system where all the money was given out up front and when groups run out of money they horse trade to get more from other departments. This would force major problems (presumably the cause of the overrun) into the team sphere instead of being isolated in one department.

Boss for a day Part 2. I'd like some time to work on pet projects at work. There is stuff I'd like to spend some time on that just isn't in the budget for our group. I have no idea how they'd fit this into the charge hours to the goverment scheme, but I'm sure what came out of it would benifit the program tremendously.

I'll also be a bit negative and only answer question 2 - the things that frustrate me...

Being large, it carries a significant overhead of support people. Of course you need people to administer internal functions, but I sometimes wonder if they are aware of the world that we, the consultants doing work for clients, actually inhabit. Archaic systems that we "have" to follow that add nothing to our work but come up once in a blue moon in the guise of an audit or a poorly-run "training course". I could go on but I won't!

Being large, internal communication is very difficult. There are teams in completely different departments that do almost exactly the same work my team does, but we are barely aware of each other's existence, because it is (a) very easy to get in the rut of only dealing with a few people and (b) very difficult to bust out of your niche and see what else is out there. A fellow graduate in an ergonomics team once told me that they keep missing out on internal work because other teams do not they exist, so they sub-contract out the work! The intranet is awful, in the way that only something run by a committee can be cf. the internet which is really useful and organised by no-one at all! There are some tentative moves to fix this with some internal social networking apps being trialled soon, so that you can get a feel for who else is out there and what they do.

Rant over, I feel better now!
