Elizabeth Williams I just started my photography business, Girl + Camera LLC, a few months ago. I was talking about the business gaining new clients over lunch with former co-workers yesterday, and one asked asked if I'd do a family portrait for her. Now, I do events & print work, but for an ex-coworker, I might do it. Then she said, "I'll even pay you with a home-cooked meal!" How do I explain this is a *business* and I can't do freebies without saying "Bitch, you don't work for free and neither do I!"

Having a lean mindset and good planning could mitigate the unforeseen things that come up.

Hi Penelope, I enjoyed your webinar. hope you do more soon. I know your focus is more on young people's careers, but I am in my late 40's about to take a year career sabbatical. I like your advice in general, so I'm wondering if you have written about sabbaticals or if you can recommend someone who wirtes and advises about sabbaticals. One year is a pretty short time so I want to make the most of it. Thanks for any help you can offer!

TOP IDEA: Elizabeth Williams To rebrand my freelance photography business, I conducted a survey to get feedback and ideas from potential customers. In response to the question "If you were looking to hire a photographer, what would be your MAIN factor in choosing a professional?", Years of Experience rated a big, fat 0%. Also, even though the main respondents were Gen Y & Gen X, 0% use Flickr & only 5% use social media sites to find professionals to hire!

Rebecca Thorman I enjoyed this article on how to avoid the "idea-to-idea" syndrome, and how so many of us are distracted by all of our ideas. I love the quote Belsky ends on, "Productive idealists recognize the value of resisting the seduction of creative flings that seldom last." - http://bit.ly/dCKjFG - are you an idea person? Or do you have a good mix of idea/productivity?

I will say that I have been a victim to that "disease" in the past, and on occasion I still am. But I think I am mostly in remission, as it were.

As soon as I started writing down the basics of any idea I have, (especially fiction) as soon as it hits me, the better I got. Just the knowing that the basics of the idea DO EXIST on paper somewhere tends to calm me. It is always there to be referred to. It won't escape. If ever I want to start up on it, it's waiting for me. I don;t need to keep it in my head.

Maybe that's why people sometimes engage in so many ideas; they fear that if they don't, a great ideal will be forgotten by the time they finish something else.

Cecilia Ussher Is it better to quit or be laid off?

If you're talking about unemployment insurance and severance package, the latter case is better. If you're talking about what to answer during an interview, I don't think it matters as long as you're truthful. Layoffs happen, as other contributors said, but you can also choose to move onto new opportunities (P mentioned it in her answer to an earlier similar question).

Well id say getting laid off as dependant on your employer/country you might miss out on any redundancy pay.

how ever if you can see the companys going down and you can obtain a new post id go for it (but also see if you could take volentary redunadancy which might give you a bigger pay out)

Candice Reed I have struggled to fit in for so long. I talk 2 much. I talk w/the guys, not the girls. I was fired. I quit. It took me until my late 30's to realize that if I wanted to be a writer I would have to make sacrifices. It was worth it. I never had a savings account until now, but we still went to Paris and Amsterdam and Rome? Why? Cuz dad died at 59, 2 weeks before mom retired. Corny but true- find it- find what u love and don't worry about what yr parents will say. U can't create inside a cubicle.
