I try to do as you do these days, and avoid anything that I am genuinely embarrassed about online - regardless of privacy settings. In reality, the worst thing you'll find on my Facebook page is rude language and the occasional off-color joke from a friend - in other words, nothing you don't hear about at the water cooler. The whole fracas has actually made me feel more calm about my privacy in general.

I don't think there's anything strange about avoiding a website that has had massive issues with its privacy policy and that owns anything you post on it forever and ever and is really difficult to leave because it won't let you really delete your account.

Also, lots of people aren't on Facebook. It doesn't mean we're wackos. It just means we don't like Facebook. And I think our numbers are growing. The most popular post on my blog for the last 18 months has been the one about why I left facebook.

elizabeth I just started a social networking website. I have been reading and reading about people w successs what their methods were & I can"t figure them out. All the articles say t same things along the lines of "they started this in their garages and started out with 100 people and now have 30 million members. However, they never say what they did in between. How do you get more members? What are the tricks in between?

They'll go to your site, rant and carry on, then meet someone new and likely abandon your site the way they might abandon match.com when they're with Mr. Man of their Dreams.

Also, in any promotion of your site, might I suggest you share how it differs from the time-honored standard of getting together with your in-real-life girlfriends to lament the foibles of the men in your life.

Just putting it out there...

Most pieces I've seen on this issue focus just on how disproportionately the recession has impacted early workers. This piece has both sides and in the latter half includes how entrepreneurial/ resourceful Gen Y workers, the type I see posting at Brazen, are less likely to get "lost." I saw a similar effect with the young workers coming out in the early 90's after the '87 crash (that was mt entry-level time). Resourceful workers bounced back quickly, but some used the crash as an excuse for a slow career years after the economy rebounded. So I agreed with Vanderkam's thesis in this article that despite the numbers, the recession does not pre-doom an entire generation of workers.

I just ordered their new book on amazon -- since it was 50% off, I figured it was worth the gamble.

Did browse thru it at Barnes -- I think it might be a useful resource for some of my clients due to the metaphor(s) used and the step-by-step breakdown of the change process.

That same style, though, will likely be a turn-off to others because it can seem generalized and overly simplistic.

Bryan I've just received an offer for my first full time job after graduating in May. It is a good job that I am interested in and they've made a good offer. They've given me until the end of next week to respond to the offer. Should I try to negotiate with them to get a better offer, should I take the offer as is? Does anyone have suggestions on which way I should go and why?

I was tending to lean towards the theory that it can't hurt to ask. They'll either tell me no give me the opportunity to negotiate. It just seems silly to potentially miss out just because you didn't do something as simple as asking. I've actually heard it is common for HR to give a lower offer expecting negotiation. I haven't finished my research into their benefits package so there may be something lacking there to ask about also.

My thought is, it can't hurt to ask. Even in this crazy economy, your most powerful negotiating time is the employer wants you and you haven't said yes yet. Check out payscale.com for commensurate jobs in your locale to see if you're being offered $ relatively close to market. I (finally!) started negotiating my last few jobs -- never got any flak for it. Negotiation was just standard procedure. (Of course, I was working in IT with men used to negotiation.)

Hi Raina,
I cannot argue with you wanting specialized and longer-view attention to your career goals and needs, and your frustration in not getting that.

Nor would I dispute the fact that you get 'some version of "that's not what I do"' from coaches.

Raina: Thank you Cathy. I really appreciate your answer to me. You addressed my points and frustration. How does one go about finding a career coach ...MoreThank you Cathy. I really appreciate your answer to me. You addressed my points and frustration. How does one go about finding a career coach who helps with long-term career management? Aside from rapport, how would one go about really quantifying the coach's results? Would the coach know how to work with someone like me? Are the certifications really informative as to a coach's ability? How do you find someone who only works with certain types of people in a certain type of space? How do you NOT WASTE MONEY just trying on different coaches for size? I would have rather spent $3,000 on investments in my IRA or on a trip to attend a friend's wedding, but I decided to invest in coaching. We all only have a limited amount of dollars and there are tons of temptations/necessities competing for that dollar. Why would I go with a coach who condescends to me and makes me do all the legwork for my position when that's exactly the opposite of what I'm looking for? Career coaching is not like personal training at all. Whoever used that analogy is wrong. I have a lot of training in rhetoric, logic, and argumentation, so if someone is going to use a faulty analogy with me just to pooh pooh my ideas, then that type of communication will be handled by my logical and analytical mind and that person should not take it personally at all. I like to clean up errors in logic and reasoning.
