I’m a technologist, not a techie. Or – a programmer who also likes people. I’m just as happy writing code as I am discussing the business merits and applications of Twitter or explaining how a search engine works in language that people understand. I’m fascinated by how technology is affecting our lives in the 21st century, for better and for worse, and am excited by what I, as a programmer can create with it. I’m currently pursuing a graduate degree in Computer Science, focusing on Twitter and media contagion; my undergraduate thesis was on plagiarism detection in Haskell. I’ve interned on an R&D project in, taught beginner Java in the UK, US, and China and developed curriculum that was taught across the US and in China.
I’m organized, motivated, creative, and adventurous: I trained in martial arts in China, am a qualified CSIA Level 2 ski instructor, and have worked in both the US and China as well as my native UK. I’m passionate about what I do and always keen for a new challenge.
CSI 1706 - “Éléments de programmation pour la gestion”
Responsible for updating and adding to the Programming C++ and Java curricula, to be used at locations across the USA for the 2009 season. Includes writing tutorials and developing teaching aids.
Hired through ID Tech Camps after previous summers and ongoing work with them to instruct and lead the creation of a new venture in Shanghai. Worked with another instructor to create an “American Tech Camp experience”, teaching Video Game Creation and Programming in Java using the curriculum I had developed on for the US camps.
As a camp instructor, I was responsible for the wellbeing of a class of up to 11 children. I taught Video Game Creation (VGC), using the Fusion application, Game Modding, using the Warcraft 3 World editor, and Programming. In programming I taught some C++ but mainly Java, using a curriculum and teaching materials that I had developed. I also developed teaching materials for VGC.
As Lead Instructor, I ran the camp in the absence of the director, dealt with behavioral issues, dispensed medication, ran check-in and check-out and acted as a mentor to other members of staff.
Also worked for ID Tech as a Camp Instructor June 2007 - August 2007.
From a loose specification I designed and implemented a database in Access (with the use of some Visual Basic code) to organize the management of contracts and consultancy projects within the department. An iterative design process was used to maximize end-user feedback. The database minimized data duplication, improved data reliability and further improved the tracking and statistical reporting available to the department. I worked with a non-technical colleague to create a User Manual.
Helping first year undergraduate students with their Computer Science courses, which were taught in Haskell and Java. I also demonstrated the Informatics@Edinburgh stands at the Edinburgh Science Festival, which included the teaching of Flash to young children.
As an intern, I designed and coded an R&D project consisting of share tracker for cellular phones written using standard J2ME libraries. Also used J2EE (servlets), JDBC and SQL. Participated in a small group project consisting of a website for a charity to automate funding applications.
