Rebecca Thorman I have to admit, I don't even really know how the recruiter process works. Where do you look for and find candidates? Is it by resumes online? Referrals from existing employees?

Most recruiters use a variety of methods to source for candidates. For example, many recruiters utilize employee referrals, social networking sites, cold calls, and job boards. For job seekers to increase their chances of securing a new role, it can be helpful to also use a variety of methods. Try increasing your presence on social networking sites with an updated and professional resume, join clubs or organizations affiliated with your areas of interest, and network, network, network!

Rebecca Thorman When you leave a message talking so fast I can't understand you, then say your phone number EXTRA fast, chances are I won't call you back. Why are people so inept at leaving good messages!? This a pet peeve of mine. Here are my general rules for a good message 1) Keep it short, 2) Say your name and phone number SLOWLY in the beginning, 3) State the actual clear purpose of your call, 4) Say your name and phone number SLOWLY again at the end. What are your pet peeves and rules?

So it's not nagging; it's a recognition that the voicemails I leave are usually incomplete or make me sound like an idiot. Sending an email after a voicemail might be less nagging and more just covering the bases.

La Donna Lokey I love recruiting and interviewing people for a living. But sometimes - I think because of my relaxed interview style or friendly demeanor - candidates get too comfortable and tell me things they shouldn't. They confuse an interview chair with a therapist's couch. Have you ever gotten too comfortable and said something you shouldn't during an interview? What did you do? Did you get the job anyway?

I responded with the politically correct answer and then added, "And then I would call my mother and ask her what to do." For a moment, I regretted it because I thought it made me sound immature, but my interviewer ended up loving it and telling me a story about how her mother has helped her in her career. I got the job. I could have been lucky, but I like to think I just read the situation right :)

My demeanor is normally relaxed as well. And, you are right, sometimes candidates try and provide personal information that really is not job related. I think there is a fine line between professional and personal. Sometimes difficutlt to know where that line is. I had an interview with someone in the past who wanted to tell me about her recent ski trip. At the time, I was a skier so I was interested but...didn't really know if I should comment and join in the conversation or just listen. But, I got the job so, I guess whatever I did worked!

Amy Ng I recently submitted my mid-year self-assessment. I always procrastinate because I hate having to quantify and qualify what I've done. That said, I do admit feeling a sense of accomplishment when it's done, and I truly appreciate the opportunity to contribute to my performance discussions with my boss. After all, who can tell my story better than me? Does your company let you provide input prior to your evaluations? How comfortable are you in rating yourself and assessing your own performance?

I seem to wait until the last minute to submit my mid year self assessment as well. Normally, it is easy for me to talk about the success of others than myself. I do keep an ongoing folder of items I want to highlight on my assessments. And, that has helped me to remember my accomplishments and stay organized.

Sure the sandbox has changed and the toys are different, but by in large I've observed it to be more or less grown up children prone to the same temper tantrums, short attention spans and difficulty sharing their things with other kids. :)

TOP IDEA: Amy Ng I am intrigued by the increased level of parental involvement in Gen-Y job hunting and career development and management. I would love to better understand this new dynamic in the workforce. That, or their need to control their children and their children's life is out of control.
Does anyone teach their children well and let them go?.

I have done local alumni admission interviews, and it always gives me pause when a potential student, not much younger than I am, a student who wants to attend a huge university in one of the largest cities in the world, comes in to interview with a parent, and the parent expects to remain in the room during the interview.

And if she heard about a job lead in her travels, she would write it down and tell me about it. But she never took any kind of specific initiative without my direct knowledge. (Such as calling a manager, or some such madness.)

But I know people in my family who would do that. I have often thought that I have many weaknesses, but none of them entail my mother going to a job interview with or for me. But more importantly, she would not presume to do so on her own.
