Ryan Paugh Even though I'm currently living in Madison, WI I'd really love to move back to the East Coast soon to be near more friends and family. I've sold my girlfriend on the idea of coming with me. Her first pick is somewhere in North Carolina. My first pick is somewhere in/around Boston, MA. She thinks Boston is too cold + doesn't have enough of an artsy scene. I guess I'm not really sure. I figured I'd leave it up to the experts. Any thoughts guys?

Despite the unemployment rate consider Providence, RI. You can still work in the Boston market.
We have a fine cluster of regional theater with a national reputation. And a fine local music scene.

And a cluster of excellent colleges, Brown University, Rhode Island School Of Design, Johnson & Wales...

North Carolina is nice too, different. Cost of living is less but so are salaries.

Good luck. I lived in WI for two years before returning to RI, don't regret it.

I love Charlotte. Uptown is fabulous, and getting better. We have NoDa which is our art district, and lots of nightlife and restaurants and local events. It still feels like a small town though.

I'm working in Wilmington right now, which is a big difference... great for people watching but I haven't made my mind up about it yet!

Carlee Mallard I work in customer support in the travel industry and so we have some down time right now until the holidays. Management wants us to work on training and development related tasks while we have the extra time. They've asked us for ideas. What do you think would be valuable? So far I've thought of learning new skills (i.e. foreign languages, programming, etc.), decorating my home office (for improved culture!), and starting an office library of books we can borrow. Anything else?

Ms Nikki:
As a Corporate/Special Event Organzier, I don't charge for brainstorming a idea for an event. I charge for planning and organizing the event. I believe that if the potiential client contacts me and takes advantage of my FREE INITITIAL CONSULTATION I will seal the deal and have them on contract by the end of out consultation. That is when my fees are applied.
I charge a fee for organizing the event. Depending on the organization, I will look at charging either a flat fee or a percentage of the gross income. Either way the client will be required to pay for the retainer and to provide at least 50% of the projected gross income or of the flat rate. The balance is due at the day of the event. Again depending on the organization if it is a gross payment, calulations would have to be completed to know exactly what is owed so that will take no longer the 48 hours. All others are due prior to the event in full!

Hope this helps,

I've always been taught two things: one, that if I work hard enough at anything and become an expert in it, I can make it into my job, and two, all the work in school and at actual work is to help you get to the job or position that you want. So for instance, someone wants to write, so he/she can become an author, a blogger, a journalist, an editor, whichever job is the most appealing. Becoming the best in any of these fields can still become his/her "work," but it's also enjoyable.

Of course, you have to be realistic. There will be facets about your work (like the comedian example Marisa brought up) that you won't want to do for whatever reason: it's boring, it's tedious, etc. Well, suck it up! Life, and work, isn't going to be entertaining 24/7, and everyone should recognize that.

That being said, you have to enjoy SOME part of your job or you're in the wrong field or position.

Ryan Healy Fascinating quote from Peter Thiel about the ridiculousness of today's higher ed system ""People can't do anything entrepreneurial or innovative or even nonprofit—anything that's not safe and well-paying—because they have this mountain of debt. And so education is something that has become a retardant to technological innovation and progress, even though the common perception is the exact opposite." I completely agree. Here's the link: http://www.mcclatchydc.com/2011/01/18/106949/study-many-college-students...

In my experience the best business educators are not in the classroom unless you go to an elite school. They are partners of companies you used to work for. A former manager who started a consulting firm. A friend's coworker who has been running a startup for a year. A ex-class mate who has worked in ibanking for 5 years. Even a venture capitalist who blogs every day. So to say that education is a golden ticket I think is far from the truth... but this is business education I'm talking about. Granted there are some great baseline theories that b-school teaches.

IMHO I disagree that you need education in the subject matter in which you are going to conduct your startup, it doesn't have to be institutional education, you can teach yourself.

Note: I'm referring to business education, not tech/science education which is absolutely necessary for those types to know, it's much more of a specialty.

I've gotten two replies, one was that I needed to be a member (not something currently in my plans). The other chamber was much more receptive and I'm currently gathering materials to send over. I suppose the lesson from all this is simply to get going and ask.

If you're looking to perfect the pitch and get more open doors, my experience has been that a one page sell-sheet summarizing what you're offering in your presentation (as mentioned above) is the most effective to pry the door open. I also ask for a quick 15 minute meeting where I provide a separate presentation with why my information will benefit their members and why *that* will benefit them as a chamber or association.

SXSW is so expensive, I can't pay for it without my company, but it's also one of my favorite memories in recent years. This week I discovered the company (<10 staff) & person hiring, found that people in my LinkedIn network are connected to the hiring manager & I'm very interested in interviewing. What would you do? Ask for an introduction? Ask them to recommend you? Ask for the best way to approach the hiring manager? Do nothing? What should I be cautious about?

Tyler Durbin As I'm sure you've seen, most cities have their own young professionals group (i.e. Dallas Young Professionals Club). These groups are great for networking but can also provide some great events to learn (speakers, panels,etc.). But what kind of Brazen community would be if we didn't think outside the box. As YP's what are some cool event ideas you would like to see from these YP organizations?

Most YP groups need funding though and they have to show high engagement numbers, especially when you also have sponsors for specific events. That means you need high attendance, and to be frank, our monthly happy hours were always our most popular events. We had five committees though, and only one was focused on social. Perhaps you could offer the San Diego YP group your time and volunteer to set up a professional development arm? It'd be easy to start with one event a month or every two months. Usually, YP groups just need the people to plan the events. Hope that helps!

Carlee Mallard My company just updated its social media policy. What's interesting is that the Communications office has asked all employees to remove the company name from our LinkedIn "professional headline" (although we're allowed to continue to list the company in our work history) in order to "avoid the appearance that an employee is an authorized [company] spokesperson and to avoid the association of personal opinions" with the company. Are there any other companies out there taking this route?
