Anisha I've recently been asked to edit a business book. The author and I have not decided on payment option, so I thought I'd throw this up here. How much should I ask for? Having never done this before, I'm about as clueless as the author! Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Kim N. Campbell Has anyone had to overcome being socially awkward in a new work environment. I started a new part time job for a company I really like but am painfully awkward and don't want to seem like a bad fit. How do you guys get comfy with fellow employees at a new job?

Thank You so much everybody, everyone's advice has been really helpful.

@rebecca-brough pita chips and hummus for snacks and they seemed to appreciate that. Food totally brings people together.

@anne- great point! being patient with the process of feeling part of the family is probably really important. Few people come in and immediately fit in. Letting it happen will probably be best. Right along the lines of what Lynn and Paul said, I'd rather be awkward for a while than be contrived, fake and annoying trying to be part of the gang.

@Melissa, I work at starbucks too so I have totally got the sunny morning greeting down! I think that helps too.

What's great about this office is they have a kitchen and a different team member cooks lunch for everyone once a day. I cooked for the first time Monday and got a chance to talk with everyone about all sorts of things. It really helped me feel more comfortable with everyone.I trust that over time, I'll fit right in.

Thanks so much for all of your thoughtful feedback.

:)

I mean, you don't know the people or the politics or workplace customs. So it's fine to be a little timid about that stuff. Just be confident about who you are. That's important. And, one-on-one lunches get you to know the people and the culture much faster than group lunches, I think.

Candice Reed Author and ex- editor of H & G Magazine Dominique Browning was on TV this morn pushing her book.I just finished reading it and have to say it was tough trying to feel sorry for a rich woman who lost her job, couldn't figure out which of her homes to live in and has/had a masochistic relationship with some guy for 10 years. Hell, he even helped edit her book. Maybe I'm wrong, but real people can't quite relate to this type of job loss. Or maybe it's just me. Maybe I need a cheeseburger.

Candice Reed I just came back from wine country in Canada- threw the toothbrush and a bathing suit in the car and pointed it north. (NYT just did a story about the area on Sunday..pretty sure they are following me.) The point is: would you rather have a six-thousand square foot home and fancy-ass car or the ability to travel and live life the way you are supposed to live it? I made my choice. Think about it and get back to me.

Penelope Trunk I just did something big with my blog ideas: I threw them all out. I have kept a spreadsheet for years of links to ideas I like and ideas for posts I should write. And I used to write all my posts from this sheet. I decided I was actually bogged down by ideas. I decided it's easier to have ideas than to write. Do you ever feel this way? I am wondering if the problem of not blogging is ideas or self-discipline.

Ideally I'd liberate all mine by just writing them and publishing them somewhere. Stopping all the anal perfectionism and getting them out there. I have a zillion drafts on the blog, in notebooks and ideas forever. Got to try to get them out there, not hoard them like a demented squirrel:)

Even in the beginning when no one is reading your blog (or just your best friend) it;s hard enough to be raw, honest and flawed. Especially if you're a writer and people expect everything to be word perfect. When you have 50k subscribers it must be worse. Please lead the way for us, help us be brave, show us how to get our ideas out there. After all, the blog posts are just a rough draft for the bestselling book?!

Candice Reed OK, I have not been able to connect here much as I have been trying to promote my book and blog and write articles for free...but it's paying off! Today I found out that TIME EFFING MAGAZINE reviewed the book and it is in my copy that just came in the mail! I am also appearing on BetterTV at the end of the month, so it's getting exciting! Just finished the proposal for my next book and will send it off later this week. Anyone need any tips- just ask me!

Candice Reed I have struggled to fit in for so long. I talk 2 much. I talk w/the guys, not the girls. I was fired. I quit. It took me until my late 30's to realize that if I wanted to be a writer I would have to make sacrifices. It was worth it. I never had a savings account until now, but we still went to Paris and Amsterdam and Rome? Why? Cuz dad died at 59, 2 weeks before mom retired. Corny but true- find it- find what u love and don't worry about what yr parents will say. U can't create inside a cubicle.

Melissa Dutmers Hi Penelope, In a recent exchange you recommended Freelance Success as a great source for aspiring writers. http://freelancesuccess.com/ May I ask why you suggested Freelance Success? Candice Reed So I call the 800 # for AmericanAuthor.com at the request of my publisher (and a few folks on this site,) to revamp my site, and they are down the street from me. In my little town of 2500 people! And they are originally from LA. My point being that if you have a great idea you don't have to always live in a big city to be successful with it. Of course PT is proof of that, but it's so damn true!
