Cameron Showalter just finished reading "Under the banner of heaven:a story of violent faith" by Jon Kraukauer. It completely blows me away what people will do in the name of fundamental religion.

I'm wondering if you're being too harsh on yourself (you? workaholic? harsh on yourself? say it ain't so!) :) You seem to have a well-adjusted work life. And your daughter seems pretty well adjusted for someone you think you've left to fend for herself. I bet she sees you in a totally different light than you see yourself. Maybe you could try to walk in her shoes a little and let that pixie dust rub off on you.

IT's hard to let work go because it is such a huge part of our identity, even before the kids came along. At the same time, we need to remember that the kids will be there (and our kids' kids) long after the career is over.

Rebecca Thorman How much do you think it costs to move cross-country for a new position? $5K? What should people budget for? How difficult is it to find housing and start a new life? Is it worth it if your salary is similar? What if you just want to live in a new city?

As long as you know it can pay the rent for at least a month and keep you alive while waiting for the first paycheck, it will be enough.

When I budget for a relocation for someone at my company, I include anything up to $20,000! That's taking in all possible worst case scenarios, though. Usually we get most of that back as unused funds. But yes, moving does throw up some strange, unexpected and expensive events - particularly interim accommodation like serviced apartments.

then you have to think about the cost of leaving the community you've built around you in the town you're in behind, and how long it's going to take to build that up in the new location. from people I know who've relocated, that is the biggest cost, and one that they'd only take in in retrospect if the opportunity were a definite, large upgrade in position.

still, i'm tempted by the idea of leaving everything behind and starting afresh in a new location, and being sought after for my expertise in a particular field, so much so that people want me to be closer to them to get the most out of my knowledge!

great topic ladies.

Ellen Nordahl What resources have you found to be valuable in time management? At Epic, all employees receive a copy of "Getting Things Done" by David Allen, and everyone has a professional development fund to put toward materials that are beneficial to their career development. I'm putting some of mine toward "Rework" by Jason Fried, but I would love to hear any recommendations for productivity-focused books.

I've noticed a lot of articles about the pitfalls of multitasking lately - the Harvard Business Review blog has offered several thought-provoking posts on the subject.

How (and why) to Stop Multitasking: http://blogs.hbr.org/bregman/2010/05/how-and-why-to-stop-multitaski.html

In Defense of Multitasking: http://blogs.hbr.org/silverman/2010/06/in-defense-of-multitasking.html

I'll definitely look in to the Lifehacker book (I read the site daily), and I'm intrigued to learn that there's a follow-up to Allen's first book. Your Brain at Work also sounds like an interesting read. Keep up the awesome suggestions! (And Eric - I agree - it is great to feel like your company is truly devoted to providing the resources you need to stay sharp and on top of your game).

Jay Hepner OK, so I consolidated 72 separate word.docs into one 72-page word.doc. Then I found an online tool: http://www.doc2pdf.net/ to convert into pdf. Conversion successful, but some of formatting has been lost. Any suggestions for remedying that? Not sure how big a deal, but doc is 360 vocabulary words and formatting should present 5 per page. As pdf is, presentation is muddy, with last lines of entries rolling into following pages. Any ideas? TY in advance.

It's a ridiculous problem to have, isn't it? I find it amazing that you need to grab Bullzip or CutePDF in order to save a .doc or .docx as a PDF. I have been on a Mac for so long now that when I encountered the same problem at the office (where I work on a Windows OS) I had to ask the IT guy to help me. Makes a writer feel like she's losin' it!

I'net just came back round here. Funny thing it, due to my 20th C-ness, prob doesn't seem ridiculous, only problematic. Must be my atechnophilia again, rooted in my acomprehension. I've always been good with information, until it became encoded and carried around via elctrons.

You know, you cant' see an elctron. Not much as to taste, touch, smell, either.

I can sometimes hear them, though.

I don't have a career goal, I have a life goal...” to help as many people as I can accomplish what is important to them”.

I maybe a DBA by trade and IT person for my job. But when people ask me what I do for a living, my response is: “I help people better utilize technology and thus helping them improve the quality of their lives”.

Where am I going with this comment of mine... Have life goals, that your career is in alignment with. If your career is not in alignment with your life, you will never be really good at your job anyway. When your whole life (work, friends, family, hobbies) are in sync and moving in one unified direction, that is when you do extraordinary work and have a profoundly positive effect on the world around you.

I stick with GIS because it keeps me traveling from the conforts of my office. I can go anywhere, see anything, and create it from the comfort of my computer.
Plus its great for my GPS when golfing!
