TOP IDEA: Cameron Plommer I'm starting to realize that I don't need more information on HOW to do something. Instead what I find most useful is information (books, blogs, whatever) that inspires me to do something. Whether it's inspiration to learn a new topic, get in shape or be a better person. The How-to is only applicable at a low level because what works for one person may not work for another. With that said, what have you read or read regularly that inspires you?

The wisdom of that has played out as I've networked with Gen Y folks a few years younger than me (I'm in my early 30s), and constantly been inspired by their energy and enthusiasm to tackle exciting projects.

I also notice that on days when I have little to do, I feel slower and less motivated. That's fairly easy to solve - just add a volunteer or work project that is fun to the mix.

Keep your checklist handy and meticulously check off each thing as you complete it.

For me, strong coffee and some good classical music set the background for getting things done. Focus on the task at hand, and don't get distracted too often. Take SHORT breaks every hour, and then get back to work.

At the end of the day, look at your list of things you've checked off, congradulate yourself for getting things done, put it away, and pick it up again the next morning.

Cameron Plommer In my productivity system I keep going back to David Allen's GTD contexts to organize my task (next actions) lists: @Computer, @Home, Errands, Agenda, Waiting for, etc. Any other GTDers out there? Have you modified the system and how?

I personally believe that people should take ownership of their content and running their own blog whether that's WordPress, Drupal or whatever. It's just important not to create all your content inside of corporate silos. It's better for someone to publish on a WordPress blog with a plugin that pushes their posts to Tumblr, Facebook and Twitter.

YouTube is a little different because 1) it's hard for average people to encode and publish video on the web without the help of a YouTube, Vimeo, or the like. 2) They aren't creating their content on YouTube, but rather they are just publishing it. In theory they could cross post to Vimeo if YouTube banned them.

She and I had worked together in a couple of previous companies, and knew of my situation, when she contacted me and notified me of an opening for a senior systems engineer that needed to be filled, and gave me the name of the hiring manager. I had previously worked with him during contracts with Microsoft, Intel and Starbucks. The rest was just formalities, filling out paperwork and going through the process.

Cameron Plommer I'm currently taking notes from Stephen King's book about writing, On Writing. I've made all the notes (quotes and summarization) available via this Evernote notebook which is publicly available. Feel free to cut and paste and you wish. I will be adding more to the note as I read more. This notebook also has notes from other books I've read such as Rework, Crush It, Linchpin, Ignore Everybody and Switch. Thanks, Brianne, Mark, Demetra, and Kayla!

Brianne, I agree that the formal education only goes so far. Not that I would ever knock it; I loved being in academia. In one way or another I'm a permanent college student.

However, there's nothing like "making it happen," as Mark put it. It involves every critical thinking skill we have, plus execution, which is harder to master - except by trial and error.

And amen, Kayla - that's the right attitude. I try to cultivate that. Not to say I never complain, but to say that I really love my job/s. Something about hard work is satisfying unto itself!

Cameron Plommer When i graduated from college I wish I knew that anything worth doing will take a long time. In school everything is in quarters or semesters chunks, 3 months at a time then it's over and on to the next thing. Information on tests is only important for a couple weeks. Since graduating I've realized it takes far longer to do anything in the real world. Much more work is involved over a long period of time. Since I'm not used to this I often get frustrated and feel like giving up.

We're hoping what we create can help the people. On the note of things taking longer, one of the things I had to get used to is counting on others to get things done. I did my part and i'm ready to go, but must wait (which usually means follow up) for someone else. I'm usually so ready to move on to the next.

Don't give up though. You might not want to limit yourself to exactly what your degree is in. I know that if I strictly stuck to my major I would be languishing teaching history somewhere. Try to think outside the box as painful as that may be (it certainly is for me).

I think this venue is interesting; in fact my husband and I were discussing how little guidance we got from school (and family), regarding career choices. We are still "finding ourselves" although it is kind of like trying to locate things in an oversized paper bag without a real entry or exit in place.

Sometimes, it may be a case of "Be careful what you pray for, you may get it."
