Do something about it?! Those same managers need to learn how to effectively deal with their employees. Instead of complaining they don't know how to be part of a team, why don't they show them?
It's a big transition - going from school, being nurtured, etc. to working with people who all think they are right. Everyone has different personalities...there are MANY older people who do not like working in teams. It's a personality thing, not a generation thing. But someone needs to blame someone, so the earliest generation in the workforce gets blamed and stereotyped. Typical.

TOP IDEA: Bryon Ownby I was driving down the freeway last night on the log commute home and notice a trailer ad that stated the greatest resource was 60ft ahead (aka pointing to the driver of the road tractor pulling the trailer). My intial thought was companies may place their associates on their balance sheets, but what about individual managers, are they still keeping assoicates on the P&L or have they made the transition? How has your experience been of spoken culture vs reality?

Bryon,
If managers made employees their own profit and loss center (actual cost against their output) and tracked that, they can put associates on their P&L and track their earned value.

How an organization treats their employees is another issue. An organization is compromised of people and it is really up to the values of the people who create the organization to ensure the values and culture of the company is to the highest quality they can make it. Attrition rates for companies would be reflected if they see a decline in top talent leaving for other companies with a better organizational culture.

Kim Luu A crucial step that many bloggers don't prepare for is having a bunch of backup articles. You need a lot more than you think. My emergency hit and 5 posts were not enough. Writing blog articles while sitting in a hospital room caring for a sick person is far more difficult than writing email instructions. When you add in flu fever and bronchitis, any ability to write coherently went out the window. I recommend having 30 posts for backup. They should be evergreen topics.

Linda,

I believe that addressing the personal or medical issue is based on how your blog is being used. If it is a business blog and you are treating it as a business then it has no place in there.

Just think, if you are out for surgery, do you have your receptionists or assistant tell every caller, "Linda is out for surgery and here's the entire story". You would admit or reference the illness if someone asks but you wouldn't broadcast it to the entire world.

If the blog is a personal journal or personal blog, then it may be appropriate to work the topic in.

The best judge of what is right will only be you. You're the only person who knows everything you have planned for the blog and how you use it.

What people also forgets is that blog readers are there to find something for themselves. Unless they're reading a personal blog for vicarious experiences, they really don't care about your issues.

Ryan Paugh I'm so tired of listening to people bitch about Generation Y. This morning I started reading yet another Gen-Y narcissism piece (http://bit.ly/b8lXO5) written by Andrew McAfee. Gag. The thing is, I agree with what he's saying. What really bugs me is that we view things like narcissism as if it's a generational phenomenon when it's clearly a bigger issue. To be fair, the author says he's sick of narcissists young and old (I am too) but the focus is on Gen Y instead of on the bigger picture.

You've heard the term "same shit different day" well it's the same from generation to generation. People don't change.. You'll always have the older generations shaking their fists and screaming those damn kids when in retrospect when they were younger there were old bastards screaming the same thing at them. Seriously, I'm tired of all the Gen Y talk... It's not quantity over quality. That's what people need to remember. My clients get a lot of junk from chop shops that proclaim they can get them to the top of the list. What they fail to realize is that my clients are at the top of the list in their market... SEO is not generalized it's about what the company does best and getting it to the right people. If you look up Web development for my company you will not find us. But if you look up Interactive Brand Strategy you will, and that is what I am looking for.. People who want what I have to sell and not people who are out shopping for a Web site they want slapped together. They can go to Craig's List for that shit.

Review the list, the opportunities and the possibilities on a regular basis (hey you’re a start up there is no time for sleep) and look at “lateral” ways to integrate with them (the best ideas come from outside the area that has direct responsibility for the product – an old quote from somewhere (wink)). The information sent should be short and sweet (like any elevator pitch) and you’ll easily be able to weed out the actual opportunities from those that are just that “good ideas”. In the end, it’s all about follow up . . . IMHO as an old guy

In start-up mode, you and everyone in the company has 100 things to do a day, and time for one or two. Being focused on growing the opportunity at hand is key to thriving. Growing your network is also key, so if you can quickly determine that potential exists, just not now, refer them to someone you know who might be ready and keep their info for the future, encouraging them to stay connected as Joseph and Dave advise. The best will figure out over time how to be indispensable To Brazen and a real partnership will become obvious, when the time is right.
