People like to point and laugh at "stupid people". We're not allowed to do it in the "real world", so we turn to TV to provide a source of stupid people to laugh at.

William Bryan How do handle with not achieving a long-term goal? I had a long term goal of getting into graduate school at Truman State University. I met all the short term goals I set up for myself, but in the end I was not accepted. How do you handle with defeat? What are some steps to keep your positive attitude? I try my best to stay positive by reading motivational blogs or stories, but I still get down on myself and crawl into a comfort zone. What do you do to keep yourself aggressive and movitivated?

Instead of 'I failed,' look at is as an experiment that had a certain result, go back to the drawing board and try a different, best idea you can now come up with tactic with the information you now have.

Brett Kunsch Are we still really "Waiting on the World to Change," as John Mayer sang about in 2006? I think not. But I do see people continuing with this passive approach to life. How do we show our generation that it's us as individuals (rather than "the world") that we have control over changing? http://bit.ly/dF1bWO

In a way, people on Brazen are doing that already through all of these exchanges of ideas.

@Chris - Could you expand a bit on that? I think I follow but I'd love to hear more of your perspective!

Penelope Trunk Ryan Paugh asked me to give some advice on video. We had to do it five times because I kept not liking how I looked. Is this normal? I said that we all know it's great to work with people we really like, but instead of looking for those people, just BE one of those people. Be someone who is likable and then friends will come to you -- at any company. Do you think this is true?

I'm not very good at small talk and I'm usually not going to walk up to someone and introduce myself. However, I always try to smile and say hi to people, and I find that people do end up coming to me. I just started a new job, and this seems to be working well. In high school my best friend was the type of person who never met a stranger, so I made a lot of friends through her striking up the initial conversation, which was wonderful! Too bad she lives in another state now or I might make her escort me to networking events!

When I was in college I took a TV workshop and they literally told us what type of face works well on video. Flat nose, high cheekbones, wide set eyes. Any other face won't come across on screen the way it looks in real life--the expression won't come through to the viewer. I don't know if that helps at all.

You could try standing back further. I have very angular features and I tend to look really goofy on video unless there is enough distance that my entire torso (at the very least) can be seen. Having another person in the shot also helped.

Rebecca Thorman Still working on this a bit, but posted my distinguishing characters and beliefs on my blog yesterday (http://bit.ly/a8lX5F). These are the themes that guide my decisions. Many are actually the same as my Top Ideas here on Brazen! Do you have an Ethos? What would you list on it? What are some of the themes that guide your work and life?

It's so refreshing to see people thinking and talking about their values and ethos.

Some months ago, Roger Steare and me rolled out a truly free test for personal use called ethicability (version 2010). Give it a go (http://www.ethicabilitytest.org). It will give you a personal report on three basic ethic reasoning modes and ten moral values such as Love, Patience, Courage, etc.

We hope to make people stop and think. We want companies to adopt it, as part of the process of becoming ethical in what they do and how they do it. But it may also help Brazenists choose their values.

Rebecca Thorman I love when people quote and link to my blog, but I find myself getting frustrated when people take large pieces of my post and include it in their post, even with attribution. I just feel like the blogger is being lazy and can't come up with their own analysis, so they just copy and paste. Instead, I feel like they should say, "go visit this link" instead of reprinting my post into theirs. Am I overreacting? This happens to me often, and I'm getting fairly frustrated. Should I say something?

Hey Erin. I looked your resume posted on your profile. Good experience in the culinary arts!
For the sales and marketing jobs, if they are calling you based on the resume you have on your profile, I'd guess they were entry level or commission only positions. Positions like these, especially commission only, often make their money by getting almost anyone into them, having them make a few sales and move on. A sure fire way to notice these positions if they say "sky's the limit $ making selling x,y,z... make your own hours," I'd be wary. Entry level positions on the other hand , for good and reputable companies, can be worthwhile if you're willing to put time in and there is a way to advance in the career path. Does this help/give you the info you need?

Best,
Bryson

Bryson Saez What is the root cause of your personal brand? I've been thinking on my personal brand lately, and it can be directly traced to a young professional intensive at the United Nation in NYC. While there I took a pledge to work towards the millennium development goals. Ever since then I've been working towards environmental sustainability. Do you have a root cause for your personal brand?

Stefanie Kelly I would love some perspective on an issue with a client. He is 43 days overdue on payment for a project. Two weeks ago, he told me that he was waiting for a cheque from his client on this project that was "in the mail". Today, he said his client is still "freeing up the funds" for him and he expects them within two weeks - at which point he will "quickly turn around a check for me". I feel though, that as my contract was with him this is irrelevent and he should still pay me on time. Thoughts?

I can tend towards being a pushover sometimes and having the benefit of this outside perspective definitely helped in giving me the confidence to push back with this delinquent client. I will definitely also be making use of all of the advice as to how many of you have handled contracts to avoid situations like this in the future. So far, I have received the 50% of the balance owing I requested from this client - time will tell how responsive he is at living up to the other half of the agreement. Again - thanks!

In the future, don't wait to invoice -- do it as soon as the job is completed even if your client is whining about how poor he/she is. That way, if you do need to take legal action, you have a true record of how late the payment actually is.
