Bryan Bliss How can I get an idea of the TRUE values of a company and the real day-to-day culture of an organization? Is there valuable homework I should do pre-interview, good/revealing questions to pose their interviewer or will the true reality of what a job/organization is really like only be apparent after I've accepted the position and worked in the environment for awhile?

I agree with Amy that there can be conflict between stated values and actual company culture.

More importantly, however, I think that the only decent measure of company culture is getting to know employees (preferably in more than one department) outside of the recruiting process. People who are recruiting you are not going to be very forthcoming about office culture specifics outside of buzzwords. (Especially if you're being recruited, vs. interviewing - they're selling you, too.)

Doing your homework is great. Showing up early for interviews and trying to ensure that you get face time with hiring managers inside their office, vs. off-campus, can also be helpful. Just a walk-through or two can help flesh out a more complete image of a business.

That said, you'll never know 'til you're on board - and first impressions can be misleading. That doesn't mean you can't suss out some general sense of the culture in advance, but its accuracy will be limited at best!
