Thanks, Brianne, Mark, Demetra, and Kayla!

Brianne, I agree that the formal education only goes so far. Not that I would ever knock it; I loved being in academia. In one way or another I'm a permanent college student.

However, there's nothing like "making it happen," as Mark put it. It involves every critical thinking skill we have, plus execution, which is harder to master - except by trial and error.

And amen, Kayla - that's the right attitude. I try to cultivate that. Not to say I never complain, but to say that I really love my job/s. Something about hard work is satisfying unto itself!

Nancy Newhoff I left my job of 17 years in California, moved to North Carolina and cannot get a job. I have a Bachelor's degree in Business Management and a MBA and I am told I am "over-qualified." What is with that? I have two resumes, one with the degrees and one saying I am in college. I have over $100K in student loans and I am wondering if I did the right thing.

I know salaries are lower in the south and I think you are right about the degrees. I am proud of what I have achieved, but it is time to move on. I never thought it would be this difficult once I got my MBA. I had an interview at a major bank yesterday. I enjoy working and helping people and the salary is not as big of an issue as it was in California.

TOP IDEA: Brianne E. Villano The internet can provide supplementary, or even primary, education for a fraction of the cost of a college or university. We should all take advantage of the wealth of knowledge literally at our fingertips.

I've also rediscovered my library and it's amazing how I can get nearly any book I want sent to my library and they'll have it ready for pick up. I can learn about anything I want for free! Between that and all the free courses and resources online, it's pretty crazy. I still see value in traditional university training though and think it's absolutely necessary, but you think costs could go down instead of up.

I think that college and universities are going to have to restructure themselves just as businesses have in the wake of the internet boon regarding education. Those little slips of paper are only as important as the field you're working in and if you don't plan to be a cubicle or office-jockey for the rest of your life, it doesn't hold the value it once did. Hopefully costs of colleges and universities will someday reflect that shift.

This site is too much like a self-help book on infinite feedback. I want customers for my flooring business in the Denver Metropolitan area! There, see how easy it is to state your business, and go on? So far, I haven't seen one single person in here who doesn't sound like a patient at a phychiatric clinic. For $60,000 a year I'll cut through the nonsense at your company like Genghis Khan raiding villages in China, if you want to hire me. Like what you hear? It's called "clarity", "sense of purpose", and "maturity", all of which seem to be lacking here. Just say what you mean, and mean what you say, that's all I ask.

If it's a writing job and the hiring manager asks for writing samples, providing the link can easily address that request without adding multiple pages. If it's for sales or other areas, I would hesitate using a link, but would add the information within context as an option if the hiring manager is interested enough to want more information about you.

Some of the best sites I've been to have been short, sweet and simple, many people with this new era in the internet age have shorter and shorter attention spans and thus looking through a gorgeous site can be tedious. In regards to your site doctor S, there just isn't enough to grab the eye. You have your blog front page and only 1 menu option...too stark. Ryan Paugh Some Canadian official is trying to convince teachers to let students use mobile phones in the classroom (http://bit.ly/bXMl9F). I think this is a stupid idea. I'm all for integrating social technology into education, but I'm a little conservative when it comes to in-person eduction. I think time spent learning in a real-world setting is important. Adding more social tech to homework assignments is great, but these kids need to spend time unplugged, too.

TOP IDEA: Brianne E. Villano What does a "real job" entail? - Rush hour traffic - Long commutes - Less time for loved ones - Less time for loved activities/hobbies - Limited vacation and sick time - Loss of health while sitting at a desk for 8+ hours a day The list is endless. To embrace our passions instead of pushing them off to the weekend. "Is it Friday yet?"

TOP IDEA: Brianne E. Villano So much of the time, higher-thinking organisms like professors don't realize that what they are "teaching" isn't getting through because they can't translate their own advanced thoughts into something more palatable for their students. Teachers in general need to find ways to break down the advanced ideas and principles into bite-sized pieces in order to get through to those they teach. Only then will the students be able to grasp the large concepts and move forward.

They often don't care about making something sound interesting, more along the lines of Brianne's point, they think it's interesting so they don't feel the need to explain that part and then assume everyone has the basic understanding that they do. I think it's also hard for a lot of teachers to really make their teaching styles work for different types of students. People in general fall back on what works best for them.

It's not quantity over quality. That's what people need to remember. My clients get a lot of junk from chop shops that proclaim they can get them to the top of the list. What they fail to realize is that my clients are at the top of the list in their market... SEO is not generalized it's about what the company does best and getting it to the right people. If you look up Web development for my company you will not find us. But if you look up Interactive Brand Strategy you will, and that is what I am looking for.. People who want what I have to sell and not people who are out shopping for a Web site they want slapped together. They can go to Craig's List for that shit.

TOP IDEA: Brianne E. Villano We never really own anything. Things can be taken away from us or we can lose them. People can leave as well. In a country where the biggest and the best is supposedly everything, I'd rather rent my world. TOP IDEA: Brianne E. Villano There's really no such thing as right or wrong, within reason. Murder, of course, is wrong. Or is it if that murderer took someone of yours first? See what I mean? It's all a series of choices. We assign the stigma of an ethical and/or moral life to actions and choices that others make. We should take a page from Mother Nature's book, live and let live, and realize that not everything is black and white, cut and dried. We make the decisions that are the best for us at the time and that's it.

Reply to Barbara,

Career choices are extremely important whether you are 20 or 55. Our country was built on industry (farming, coal, steel, manufacturing). It does not resolve the other half or 3/4 of the economy where we are employed (teachers/health/social services/marketing). We are not all suited to start a business, we have to find that 'nitch' that suits our well being, experiences, and education.
