Blay Whitby I've paid for about 8 sessions with a career coach but it doesn't seem to have achieved anything at all. What should be my next steps?

You seem to blaming institutional cultures w/o taking responsibility and recognizing the amazing choices you have. You have winning skill sets. She’s also right that you need to do more self questioning, but I would take it even further and deeper. This means stepping back from your current tactics, e.g. networking (which just seems to frustrate you now anyway) to think strategically and—even more deeply—existentially.

I agree: let’s take this offline. For one, I think your situation is special, not that relevant to other readers (except perhaps give pause to those counting on a career in academia after grad school). Also, at first I thought you were using “networking” too narrowly- which is why you didn’t like it. Now, I think you might be using it too broadly –or in a way quite different from how most, including on BC, use it. So, I’d like to clarify that. Plus, I think in this medium, I may have been overly direct/harsh. Finally, there’s that needed depth that is both too personal and difficult reach in this forum. If this is important to you, contact me.

Firstly, ...More@Diane I have certainly though hard about other skills and other forms of work but concluded there aren't any non-academic roles for me. Firstly, as a slightly eccentric and free-thinker, it's essential for me to belong - preferably to a high-status institution. A high point of my year is the faculty parade in full uniform at graduation. Also it's very hard, almost impossible, to get published without a creditable academic affiliation. In my field, 'freelance' translates as 'crank'. Thirdly I need the privilege of academic freedom. I am one of those people who believes that academics have greater rights in freedom of expression than ordinary citizens. Last, I really don't want self-employment or entrepreneurship. I have no problem with other people taking that route but it's not for me. I'm not any sort of businessman. I like your suggestion of doing something but I don't know what.

Elysa Rice posting this question for a friend: looking to send clients the new "must have" book for 2010 (or at least recent years) on the best way to upgrade their business. I know Good to Great and TopGrading are classics. Have any suggestions for must have business book?

Beatriz Alemar: I've heard great things about "Rework." "Unmarketing" is a great choice for marketers. "Content Rules" so far is a great read.

Bobbi Gregory: I agree with Beatriz about "Rework". I also highly recommend "The Go-Giver".

Faith C Hi Penelope, when exploring career options or transitioning to a completely new career field, how should I weigh and explore my options? Should I go with my experience, or my interests (despite having scarce knowledge, experience); and do I also neeed to take into consideration my personality type in regards to the career options that interest me? Thanks!

Thanks a bunch!

In ...More@Faith, that's a large bill to fill in a comment box! It took me 6 months and >8 coaching sessions to begin to answer those questions! In short, though, the most important thing for you to do is very clearly identify which areas of your job are providing you with fulfillment and which are making you miserable. Write them down. Then use those as your guidelines for every career decision you make. I believe you will find that your areas of interest and enthusiasm are more important than your area of training. As a fellow engineer with interest in all the aspects of your new position, it sounds like a dream job! If you want more information then drop me an email with some specific questions, and I'd be more than happy to answer as best as I can :-).
