I had lost of contract work, hourly or part-time obligations I've been able to drum up, but nothing satisfying, and that all dried up, too. I've been wanting to take my ARE's to become licensed but 7 tests at ~$400?! Steep. Fortunatley, I just found work at a local arch firm and start in August. Very excited about this team!

It baffles me that someone of my talents cannot get work. I can take a set of CAD files from an Architect for nearly any kind project and complete all of the electrical and lighting systems, inside and out, with all calculations, electronically saved within the electronic files, complete with all specifications (PDF files) for all lighting, controls, fire alarm, and power distribution equipment. I have a thorough understanding of all codes and ordinances. I have years of experience doing this, and I can do all of this using the free products on the Net (like TokBox, Skype, etc.). AND, I have a personality and you can put me out there working with the client and they LIKE me. So, what are employers afraid of? Why can't I get a job, or even part of a project with another engineer? It is definitely a difficult time.

Ryan Paugh Do you swear on your blog? Just read an article on NPR (http://n.pr/8Xtpst) about the emotional impact that profanity can have when used by authorities. They mentioned Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz and President Obama as examples. They also mentioned that strategic profanity doesn't work for every personality and that it should be used with discretion. I've dropped an F-bomb or two on my blog. I try not to do it a lot. What about you guys?

Rebecca Thorman How much do you think it costs to move cross-country for a new position? $5K? What should people budget for? How difficult is it to find housing and start a new life? Is it worth it if your salary is similar? What if you just want to live in a new city?

When I budget for a relocation for someone at my company, I include anything up to $20,000! That's taking in all possible worst case scenarios, though. Usually we get most of that back as unused funds. But yes, moving does throw up some strange, unexpected and expensive events - particularly interim accommodation like serviced apartments.

then you have to think about the cost of leaving the community you've built around you in the town you're in behind, and how long it's going to take to build that up in the new location. from people I know who've relocated, that is the biggest cost, and one that they'd only take in in retrospect if the opportunity were a definite, large upgrade in position.

still, i'm tempted by the idea of leaving everything behind and starting afresh in a new location, and being sought after for my expertise in a particular field, so much so that people want me to be closer to them to get the most out of my knowledge!

great topic ladies.

Ellen Nordahl When you're researching companies for career opportunities, how important is the company's name or brand recognition? Are you more inclined to seek out opportunities with a company that is well-known because of media coverage and marketing (e.g., Google, Apple, Target, P&G), or are you more interested in the long-term growth and stability of the organization? How do you find out about opportunities with companies that aren't well-known by the general public?

Two questions here:

In response to your first question: Just because you haven't "heard" of a 'brand' does not mean that it's not long term or sustainable. Vice versa, just because you have heard of a brand, doesn't mean it's sustainable or long term either (we can all see this from BP's issue now). Hence, I use 2 things to determine where I'm going to get the most traction in terms of careers/clients. 1) Connections - as you know, 92% of jobs are found via connections / recommendations vs. just "applying" so I go for where there is a higher likelihood of me getting int the door. 2) I then go to Linkedin. I join the networks in the industry I'm looking and then review the 'members' lists / see where they are working. If the individual + the company looks interesting, I build a connection that way to get in as a recommendation.

Second Question: To find opportunities that are not well known, I do the same thing. Pro-actively engage in LinkedIn networks.

What @Raquel states is true, however there are different kinds of notoriety in "brands". For example, there are companies that are very well branded regionally, but perhaps not nationally. Example - in TX, everyone knows what "Whataburger" is. In FL, I've never heard of it. So make sure you are not narrowing yourself to 1 region or area unless you are 100% certain you will stay there.

I also think a lot of B2B companies fly under the radar because we as consumers aren't exposed to their marketing and advertising efforts. There are some tremendous opportunities out there if you take the time to research an industry and identify its key players.

Rebecca Thorman Just read an article about a woman who told a little white lie in salary negotiation. When she was offered a new job, she said she made $5,000 more at her old job than she actually did. The offered to match her salary, but she said, "I'd like to be making more," and so they came back and said they'd give her $5,000 more, so her new job is $10K more than her old one. $10K is an avg salary jump, but I love this tactic. Do you think it's okay though to say such a lie?

I guess there are varied opinions regarding this matter but in order not to get in trouble this article advised to simply say that you are not comfortable discussing your financial history. That is why you are "negotiating", you want what is financially sound to what you are taking in especially if it is something different from your current job.

Rebecca Thorman Would you diet for dollars? (http://ow.ly/1SOg8) Many employers are betting they can find your price. At least a third of U.S. companies offer financial incentives, or are planning to introduce them, to get their employees to lose weight or get healthier in other ways. How much money would it take to get you to get healthy/lose some serious weight? $100? $500? (If my company reimbursed personal trainers, I'd be all in)

Cary Thomson I've started volunteeering as a steward for my local union. It is terrific experience for someone interested in HR as I'll be involved in discipline and conflict resolution. However I worry about potential employers reaction. What would you think if some submitted a resume which listed Union Steward as a volunteer job? Also just so we're clear I'm not into to taking a agressive approach to conflict resolution. I intend to work collabratively where ever possible.

First, you will get an inside view of organized labor and be able to form an opinion of its efficacy and necessity. Second, true conflict management skills are transferable to many work environments. And last, should you decide to apply for work in a non-union environment or even in a union avoidance role, you will have valuable experience to offer from the other side of the table. Think of all the former IRS agents who are now tax advisors helping people avoid or survive audits. To keep your options open, remember the labor / management schism is real, so it would probably be best not to make any strong public stands until you figure out which side of the fence is for you. Hope this helps. Just so you know, part of my masters degree is in labor relations but I have never worked in a union shop and have done union avoidance consulting work. Good Luck.
