3Be interested in things you know nothing about. Even better, be interested in things you've never heard of. I read a book by A.L. Kennedy called Bullfighting. This is a topic I knew almost nothing about, nor thought I'd be interested in, but I gave it a shot just to learn something new. And it was wonderful. You learn a lot about yourself and other people that way.
