I have never thought of doing this in interviews, instead focusing on their theories related to job duties (such as asking them what their marketing philosophy is for marketing jobs).

There is definitely a 'grass is greener' mentality from both sides. I know when I've worked in an office, I've been itching to get out but then when I started working for myself I do find myself missing some aspects of it. Never miss the micro-managers though! :)

Dr. John - These are awesome questions and you're right, no one wakes up thinking that they are going to be an awful boss.

Elizabeth - Yes, you are right. Speaking socially to an employer can definitely hurt your career. By speaking open and honestly, I meant being up front with your manager about what working styles work for you. I would always advise to approach these situations from the perspective of how I can be a better employee so that it is a discussion about your growth and not just you complaining about what you don't like. Thanks for your perspective!

Jamie - I've never thought about asking what books/author a manager reads. This is an excellent way to find out what type of philosophy they prescribe to. And I agree with you whole-heartedly that the interview is the perfect place to learn as much as you can about your potential boss and working situation.

Charlie Anderson What the general thought on job candidates printing personal business cards? I know some people think it's a great idea and helps a candidate separate herself from both her current employer (if she has one) and the rest of the pack. But others think it's a tacky marketing ploy--perhaps because all that info is on a resume. Or maybe because so many people give themselves cheesy titles like "Digital Leader," "Web 2.0 Guru," or "Executive Professional." What do you guys think? Thumbs-up or down?

Are they any better than VistaPrint? [I think theirs are borderline shabby, personally.] I have a printer that prints two sided, full color, 5k cards for $100. bucks! If anyone wants his contact info let me know. He also does matching post cards which can be used for follow up personal thank you notes.

Neema Syovata Two questions, how do you follow up after a job interview without appearing too aggressive or that you are badgering the person and (2) What is the best way to apply for a job internally?

In college three years ago everyone insisted that I had to send a handwritten note in order to get hired, but at my past two jobs/internships, this hasn't mattered at all because they made hiring decisions so quickly. I have started waiting until the morning after the interview to see if the employer contacts me, with the plan to send an e-mail then so that the interviewer gets it quickly. I think it can also be a good plan to send handwritten notes for all my interviewers after the final round. Thoughts?

If they are still thinking, it will help and stand out. And even if they hire you on a spot, follow up with a written thank you to the person who interviewed you - it will set a good note for starting the new position. I once even got a handwritten note back from the interviewer in response to mine - they had no position available, but wanted me to stay in touch. And they did follow up with an offer later.

I'll be creating a blog series around the Virtual Volunteer-so those of you who have given permission for me to use your comments with first name only may see yourself in print! The actual keynote and breakouts won't happen until July, but we're going to be posting articles about this topic soon. Ashley Shute I just started a new job as a Foster Care Case Manager a few weeks ago. They're currently working on an awareness campaign for Child Abuse Prevention Month in April. Everyone is pretty apathetic about it. I was thinking of tweeting, blogging, and networking with the few people I know in the area about their effort. Do y'all have any ideas or have you done anything in regard to this particular event in the past that was successful? We're doing ribbons, wear blue and wreth layings, atm.

I will be part of a singing fundraiser against Domestic violence that is being sponsored by the Exchange Club of Haverhill, MA. It will be allowing local church choirs to strut their stuff but it is not a religious event.

Hope to see some of you there!

Good luck to you Ashley and thanks for the work that you do.

TOP IDEA: Beth Evans The Great Firewall of China creates an "Internet elite", which I am normally part of, of people who have access to blocked sites. This is linked to privilege for many reasons including that we have our own computers at work, home or both. We also know people who suggest good proxy software that we need to access blocked sites, which usually isn't free. I don't think many people outside China consider the "Internet elite" concept when thinking about Internet freedom issues.
