Scott Carver I preparing an email for potential clients. Some I have worked for previously through another firm. These clients trusted my work and requested my services a majority of the time. Some that that will receive it I haven't worked for. Question. Should the email basically be a mini-resume? Introducing myself, my company, my experience, my efficiencies etc. The business is PC/Network support. I've been doing this for 16 years for the Man. Time to be my own Man. The market is good in the area.

A little more than a quick note, but not so much of a resume. I did have on there what my capabilities are, a link to the website and a thank you for your time.
After I sent the first one, I got a call within 15 minutes and have work scheduled for tomorrow. Pretty awesome feeling.
I had neck surgery in Jan and lost my job that same month. Ready to start working for me instead of the man. So far, so good :)I'll sure need folks like you guys around though.
Thanks for your insights!

Alyson Kilday My partner and I have just opened up our own design agency. Though our new site is just going live as I type this we have had pretty good word of mouth and have kept busy. When we got our LLC we actually bartered with the lawyer in exchange for design work for his website, which saved us a bundle. Now the question I would like to post here is when and if a professional accountant is needed. And what should we look for?

It started by getting on the front page of a local paper when we got back from our 9 month sailing and backpacking adventure through the Caribbean and Colombia. Next to the story about a lady getting lost in the woods...slow news day! :) Then we did a couple of small projects for people such as baby shower invites, birthday party cards, small stuff but it got sent to 200+ ppl around town. It's a trickle up effect where we are starting to see people now seeking us out for bigger and bigger projects. On the web we have a blog, use twitter heavily, and a facebook fan page where we network with a whole different group of people.

If not, we should make one up. How 'bout "stiction," a combination of stammering and diction?

kate: Jay, great plan! though, you get credit when it shows up on this list :) if only 'might-could' were a mid-phrase change!

Boon Chew I'm not sure if this is a good place to put this - I've started being more active on a community of UX people called uxexchange.com and they have this rating system that's quite neat, involving points, badges, and a seniority based access level (similar to foursquare's) that gives you more power as you gain points. Wonder if it would work here on Brazen? Thoughts?

Not sure how you'd port the Brazen Careerist model to the SO/UXexchange model, but it's a compelling idea. Although the SO model is geared towards problem solving less simple discussion. Maybe something more along the lines of the Hacker News model (karma points).

Insomuch as this can transcend the video game model it feels fine, so I think the badges are meaningful enough. I wonder if the 4sq API could be adapted to here? Ben Lopatin There must be two Mark Cuban blog posts being discussed; the one I read does not slam attorneys, accountants, their fees, or taxes, but matter of factly recognizes them as overhead. It's core thesis is a critique of *policy* that seeks objective X by policy A, which creates more bureaucratic conditions instead of policy B which merely removes existing bureaucratic impediments. I know of no businesses, my own or clients, which go out of their way to spend money on legal and accounting fees.

I would need to see details before believing Mark Cuban's proposition that legal and accounting fees prevent employers from hiring more people. Based on many years of business experience, I find it unbelievable. If a business is pushing the legal line, to carve a niche or gain a competitive advantage, that can be expensive. To blame this on policy is dishonest,I think.

Mariusz i'm trying to get my college to install open source web authoring software (aptana studio) to use with students. it struck me, that if they were taught to use it first before moving to any WYSWIG tools, they could produce more standard compliant and leaner code. Aptana doesn't work in visual mode, so they have to hard code everything. what do you think ?

VWD - never heard of, I'll have a look :) I still like the idea of Open Source though.I'd never think look for free stuff at Microsoft's site :)
