But when a friend request or suggestion came up, I thought, "Eh, we mostly just rubbed each other the wrong way, and I'm friends with most of your friends. Let's assume by now that we've all grown up a bit."

Of course, there are some people I don't want to have contact with for specific reasons.

@Bear, I'm glad you had an opportunity where having your cards handy worked out. I'm not going to say I never have my business cards, I do. For people less technically inclined, it's a good way to exchange information. I will say, though, in my experience over the last year, anywhere where people are bearing a stack of cards means that they don't care what I have to say. They're looking for a professional handout because circumstances haven't been kind to them. Or they want me to Buy, Buy, Buy! Whereas if I go into a situation where the cards aren't part of my wardrobe for the evening, I have found that the tone of the evening is in favor of friendship, not networking. Business cards can be a trigger for you to go into networking-mode, and if that's not what you want, you probably shouldn't throw a stack in your purse. If you can balance it, then good for you!

@Kate, yeah, there are some that I don't friend...What I do love is you don't always have to be friends with everyone, you have a choice.

It's playing to his strengths, it seems to me anyway. (I'm from Melbourne so I don't really know him.) I'm always looking for inspiration to hit me, and how to incorporate style to becoming a better person.

Looks to me that in a way, athletes have their very own distinct style (due to the very competitive nature of their personality) and branding them, let alone motivating them, is a totally different ball game (pun intended!).

How to approach a big name at a conference?
---------
1)If you have heard her or him speak, comment on something specific they said and share a personal anecdote on how it's true for you/your career/life. Even well known people like to know people were really listening.
2)Ask them an opinion advice question in their field. Something like "What is THE most important advice or step ..."

I liked your question and hope to connect in this Thurs. night at 8pm.

It's convenient to grab lunch, caffeine and surf the web simultaneously. However, co-working spaces offer networking opportunities and often provide a business address, which makes things seem more legit on a website or if you list your business on Google, etc... Just have to find a place that has the right price & right co-working office mates.

The question you posed is something that hits the "emotional home" of the user. I cannot even begin to list the amount of times I have thought that about my resume. By engaging the user right off the bat you are creating a road of creative and connective thought for them to pursue. Using this approach will reduce the likelihood of being ignored and introduce a genuine relationship to the consumer.

Hey Linda, I tried to send you a regular private message but since you're not "my fan," I can't do it. So a comment will have to do!

Within the last year, I've started using my scientific editing skills for friends who write fiction. One friend in particular also wants me to do publicity and marketing for her and I am trying but I find myself not having a cohesive plan of action and I have very few media contacts with which to align myself.

She self-published which also makes getting trade reviews difficult. Kirkus is the only one so far who would do it and they charge. So to get on B&N's shelves, we need at least one trade review.

I looked at your site and you have so much great experience. I wanted to see if you taught anything online but it doesn't look that way. If you would be interested in a mentorship of some kind (if you have any time to do something like that) or if you could recommend resources of information besides that one PR blog I saw on your site, I would greatly appreciate it. Just let me know.

I think you can send me a private message because I'm "your fan." So thanks in advance for any info you can give me!

Way to take action! I would say the opposite if you had said "I'm going to TRY to expand my education." During your interviews there must be a time when you are asked a question where your answer didn't seem to be what the interviewer was looking for, so my suggestion to you is to make a note each time this happens. It's all about having CONFIDENCE in your current abilities.
