Barbara Hall Office Sabotage? Anyone go through this? How did you handle the situation? So far in the past 2 weeks, our UPS Acct has been cancelled and our MyFax Acct deactivated. Credit Card info and Invoice Info was needed, so I tend to think its an inside job. Gossip and jealously run rampant here.

I agree with you, Ty, that getting to the point can save time, effort, and discomfort. I think that many people dislike the ice-breaker type conversation that you describe.

But, if risking a moment of small talk with a stranger could lead to a connection and more substantial conversation regarding a topic that is of mutual interest, would taking that risk be justified for the introvert?

By that I mean that a fully engaged and relevant conversation of mutual interest between the introvert and the power-broker in question may be just as effective, if not more so than the small talk.

But let us assume for some reason that small talk would be the absolute only way to meet and engage with someone we had an interest in. I imagine each introvert would have to decide on his or her own if it was worth the "risk" of doing something they found uncomfortable or even in some cases revolting. I am sure it has happened.

For my own part, I have in general never been in proximity to someone I wanted to connect with enough to pretend to be a schmooze, though I cannot guarantee no such person exists. They would have to be a hell of an important person, though. And I'd have to be in a fantastic mood!

Barbara Hall Last week I overhead our "Office Manager" telling a co-worker the details of my Short Term Disability claim. OM gave info as to how much I should be expecting, what days claim was for, and that my VP allowed me to borrow vacation days into next year. I was appalled and felt violated. I immediately went to my boss. After closed door meetings, the OM was made to apologize to me. I still feel like this is a violation. Should an apology be suffice? Or is there something more that I should be doing?

I guess the question is: do you feel so violated you want the OM fired? Would you consider quitting over the incident? Are you considering a lawsuit? I wouldn't go too far with this until you know the answers to all those questions and more, as things can get out of your hands pretty quickly.

TOP IDEA: Barbara Hall After having foot surgery and being on crutches, I am learning a valuable lesson ... asking for help. I have a hard time with this, both personally and professionally. Even now, on crutches, I try to complete any task by myself and refuse to ask for help. I even have a hard time accepting when help is offered. And I realized this has carried over to my professional life. I just cannot ask for help. Do you struggle with this? And how do you get over it?

If I ask for help on something that person may have a different perspective on how to get the job done and is faster or more efficient. Rebecca Thorman I am REALLY excited today because I am officially credit card debt-free! It's all paid off and I'm pretty proud of myself. My next step was going to be to pay off my student loans (which have very low interest rates) or maybe my car (which I think has a 6% interest rate), or instead, re-build my emergency fund and then start donating to my Roth IRA again. What do you all think? Get rid of all debt or save a little first?

This was awesome to read everyone's replies. I sat down with my spreadsheet, worked the numbers and found that I will be able to max out my Roth IRA, fill my emergency fund back up and pay off my car loan completely by the end of next year - so that's the goal. I'll probably do split payments between savings and car loan as many suggested, and then roll over all to savings. Thanks so much again!

Barbara Hall I'm having a major issue at work - ongoing for 3+ yrs. 2 women - Boomers - do not like me, and show zero respect no matter what I do, or how hard I work. Rebecca Thorman This week is my first week working remotely for my job (the company is in Madison, Wis and I just moved to Washington, DC). So far, so good but I can tell I'm going to miss my colleagues! I've made my boss and closest co-worker get webcams so we can video chat; we already use gchat and phone. Hallmark Cards in Kansas City, MO. had a program where its writers' would go outdoors, spend time taking walks, going to the zoo, doing different things that helped ease any writer's block or rut sticks. It proved invaluable in that writers because more prolific because they weren't confined to their desks. Many celebrity writers have created their best work on napkins in a restaurant. I wrote a poem published several times during a Christmas party between the meal and dessert; two others came while riding horseback. I always carry pen and paper with me. Working out is also great, as mentioned above. Alex Haley often washed his hands when stuck because it seemed to release his mind and open thought channels. As for a job rut, do the same things... it helps free your mind and release any stress helping you pinpoint those hidden ideas or purpose you want to achieve.
