TOP IDEA: Rebecca Thorman Safety doesn’t create innovation. But innovation does create new jobs and new opportunities. Innovation creates new markets and cures for illnesses and ideas that make us excited to get up in the morning. You really want to help the economy? Put yourself out there. Risk everything. Do it for you, your family, your friends. We’ll all thank you. http://modite.com/blog/2009/01/07/why-generation-y-should-job-hop-even-i...

I risked all my credit cards to start up a training software company making conversation rehearsal courses (www.talksmith.net). We sold Asperger's Syndrome courses to school districts in North Dakota and Minnesota, and while we are not wealthy, I did get a patent out of it. By the way, I grew up in Silver Spring and was a TV news cameraman on Capitol Hill in the 70's. Innovation means taking risks and going down a path whose end may not be visible. Keep on innnovating, Rebecca!

Great advice. And thanks for mentioning Brooklyn Home Companion!

I think we're only going to see more and more of a niche-driven media landscape in years to come, *especially* where print publishing is concerned. I see some of the major general-interest players existing, and then the niche pubs surviving, or going even more niche (for evidence, check out how well the advertising section is thriving in any regional or local weekly/monthly paper with a specific focus, be it local news or local arts or regional food, etc.). I was actually blogging about this on my namesake blog the other day (http://elizabethnolanbrown.com/2010/05/05/no-ad-sales-slump-in-dc/). I think the "Edible" franchise is a really good example of a workable model of magazine publishing ...

Shanda What a wonderful networking site. My question: Is there a such thing as "too much" experience? When do I chop down my resume? I have had several recruiters call me and immediately ask me my salary requirements based off my resume. For the right career move, salary is not a deal breaker for me, however, I'm starting to get the impression my resume is why I am not getting call backs. Cameron Plommer So I've decided to shut down my blog, "How to Be Extraordinary" and start writing just for CameronPlommer.com The big switch is mostly because of my distaste for personal branding. You can read more about it here: http://bit.ly/eITOK2. For me blogging has become too much of a chore as well. Ty Unglebower You know what pisses me off in a lively discussion? It isn't when people differ from me. How shallow is that? It is when people begin to use their position, experience, or education to back up statements like, "You can't argue" or, "You have to accept". These things not only just piss me off and make me less diplomatic, but I see them as the last line of defense for a shallow protector of the status quo, who feels threatened by what others say, instead of empowered by what he is saying.

Some of the loudest mouths in a meeting are the very LAST people you want running things in most cases. If the loud mouth nature really were due to their passion I could see where you are coming from. I really loved my 2010 mentor and he really "speaks my language". My new mentor, though I have not met with her yet, is really approachable and kind but sometimes I need my 2010 guy to give me a swift verbal kick in the behind. Would it be a 'no-no' to go to one mentor for some things and another for others?

I think the problem is that many do ...MoreCheryl- I agree with the idea that informal mentoring relationships have been around for ages and work well. I think the problem is that many do not feel confident enough to seek out a mentor or are confused on how to turn a workplace contact into one (maybe they had a meeting with a more senior co-worker, but no longer have formal business to keep the relationship going). The last place I worked, the head of the organization decided to randomly call a bunch of junior folks and ask if they had mentors: 75% said no. So formal mentorship were an answer to this problem, and they did give everyone who wanted a mentor someone they could point to, but it didn't really help. As you say, synergy is important, but it's not even a criteria in most mentor programs. So one has to do for themselves, and this post was meant to help that person.

Megan- I would be surprised if they minded if you stopped by for your verbal kick in the pants, but you know what I'll say. Just ask them! :)

TOP IDEA: Aurian Campbell I find that in my industry there is a certain amount of business banter that must occur prior to being able to make a genuine business connection. As a mental aid for networking functions, I've come up with this idea of a "credibility threshold" (that I illustrate using a nerdy graph: http://bit.ly/hnP9xP) that I feel must be reached before valuable networking can occur. Does this happen in your industry? Do you have to prove you're worth listening to before you can network effectively?

However, if their head is in the clouds and they come off like they know more and are wiser because youth has it while age doesn't, I will walk away either leave or avoid them. Respect is earned. Thanks so much for your comments! It's something I've been thinking about a lot, so I really appreciate the feedback :-).

@Tom - I think you hit the nail on the head re: younger people - just be interested in learning and ask good questions. You raise a good point about audience, though, too. The credibility threshold for a client would be completely different than for a colleague, and I know I'd use different tactics for crossing the threshold with an engineer than I would with an exec. I suppose it comes back to the old "know your audience" adage.

@Linda - you are so right that attitude makes or breaks it. I've seen many and enthusiastic young professionals crash and burn when they are faced with more experienced professionals for just that reason. There is a fine line between confidence that allows you to engage with those more experienced than you, and arrogance that will turn them off entirely.
