Annabel Candy Hi Travel Addicts;) Just wondering what your favourite travel blogs are and what you look for in a travel blog? My blog started out as travel then evolved into personal development but now back to travel as that's my first love. I'm interested in guest posting on big travel blogs but not sure which ones would be best. I prefer the type that gets lots of comments! Thanks for you help:)

Hi, Annabel-

I'm Julie, managing editor of MatadorNetwork.com, the world's largest online travel magazine, and lead faculty member of Matador's travel writing course.

I could recommend lots of "big name" travel blogs, but I think it's smarter for you to reach out to blogs that have high reader engagement AND that dovetail nicely with your own interests and the focus of your own blog.

That being said, here are a couple of my favorites:

www.uncorneredmarket.com
http://trans-americas.com/
lolaakinmade.com
lebawitgirma.com

Cameron Plommer I'm currently taking notes from Stephen King's book about writing, On Writing. I've made all the notes (quotes and summarization) available via this Evernote notebook which is publicly available. Feel free to cut and paste and you wish. I will be adding more to the note as I read more. This notebook also has notes from other books I've read such as Rework, Crush It, Linchpin, Ignore Everybody and Switch. JenG I'm planning to host a meet-up for my blog readers in Washington DC, but would love to meet any fellow Brazen members as well. Right now it's scheduled for March 15 at 6 PM, location to be determined by attendance but probably in the Arlington, VA area. Let me know here or on my Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/jen.gresham) if you'd like to attend!

Cameron Plommer One of the main reasons I like blogging is because it's one of the only areas in my life where I calls the shots completely. At work I have to get permission to go in a certain direction or get client approval for something. At home I have to consult my girlfriend about a number of things. These are all normal and I'm not complaining, it's just that it slows down progress at times. This is why I love blogging: I get to call the shots and make all the decision. What's your take?

I see more people have added thoughts since I last participated in this discussion. So, Let me add some more =D.

@Cameron
Yeah.Consider Seth Godin for an example (for the record, I'm not follower, but I'm just using him as an example). His blog is completely about HIM, and what is on HIS mind - not anybody elses mind. It's specifically for HIM, and what makes him this good guy to everybody is that HE has something THEY CAN RELATE TO, thus those people having the same interests as HIM!

So, it's simply like that really, if you think about it like that (?).

JenG I have a guest post up at Copyblogger today discussing the five aspects of social intelligence and how to use it to better engage your readers/customers. As a writer/blogger, this is esp. tricky since you don't have the nonverbal cues to tell you how you're doing. And ironically, a bit of alone time is the best way to improve. Check it out: Is Your Low Social IQ Dooming Your Blog? http://bit.ly/fW4FhE

It took me a year of testing at Stanford Medical Center's department of Psychiatry. It looks to me like she diagnosed herself, and has repeatedly said that diagnosing Asperger Syndrome is easy, which is baloney.

So don't tell me Penelope has Asperger Syndrome, since she's self diagnosed, and has no medical opinion or credibile source of her diagnosis.

Scrollwork So much has been written about how to be taken seriously as a blogger. I need to be persuaded that it really works against me to have my blog hosted free on blogspot.com rather than having my own domain name. Is this a case of "perception is reality"? Is the perception really just a bias, and if so, would I want to make a decision based on a bias?

Aside from ".blogspot" portion of the URL, the domain is fully customizable.

There are only two things you are not able to do on a hosted blogger blog that you can do elsewhere. One is remove the navbar (but you do have a choice of colors) and the other is remove the .blogsot
I think people take a quick glance at blogger tools or have experience with them before Google bought them and assume that it's just a children's version of a blogging platform.

JenG "What if I told you that you didn't have to experience failure to benefit from it?" That's a quote from my guest post for Jonathan Fields. The idea comes from Gary Klein, psychologist and father of intuitive decision making research, who invented the idea of conducting premortems (as opposed to postmortems) before launching a new venture. Check it out. Think it could work for you? Gary's data says it does. http://bit.ly/g99sgH

JenG In Jon Morrow's guest blogging course, he mentioned the viral potential of high number list posts (as in, 101 ways to better blogging). I was surprised, as I usually dislike those kinds of posts myself. So I decided to test it. For a life lessons post, I originally planned to write 3 personal stories around a theme. Instead, I did shorter notes on 20 lessons. Closest I've come to a viral post--traffic rivals the time Leo Babauta linked to my blog! http://bit.ly/hJSwZR

I think using an outline format instead of solid text makes a post less problematic for the reader, who may see a long essay and assume time must be set aside for that material, while the list format can be read in segments w/o losing the meaning.

Ryan Paugh In case any of you are contemplating starting a blog, I read a great introductory post today from a friend of mine, Olga Garcia: http://bit.ly/i9GA71 Most peoples first post is all about them: Why they're starting the blog, what they're going to write about, etc. I love Olga's post because for me the most valuable thing about blogging has been the personal connections. Of course that was enough to pay for the blog and the hosting, so it was enough for me. Bear in mind that the vast, vast majority of people who blog will not ever monetize that blog past a few dollars a month. Why? It makes far more sense to ad spend on big blogs with established readership than to make what are effectively "bets" on small or, worse, tiny ones.

TOP IDEA: JenG I recently wrote a post on my blog talking about the importance of aptitude in choosing a career (http://su.pr/2t3FK2). But what about aptitude for leadership? We often hear the phrase "leaders are made, not born," but aptitudes suggest just the opposite. If we can accept some have more innate talent for sports or music, why not leadership? And more importantly, is this egalatarian mythology hurting our organizations?
